Can Wilson and Perry go large?

ROSS PERRY has a dream. In it, he and Danny Wilson have formed a central defensive partnership that is helping Rangers towards a glorious future.

The reality right now is somewhat different. One half of the double act is in place and doing his bit. The other, unfortunately, is out on loan at non-League Oxford United.

But that’s not stopping 19-year-old Perry from believing that one day he and pal Wilson can take over from David Weir and Madjid Bougherra in the Ibrox defence.

Perry said: “Things are going well at Oxford and it’s been a great time recently for Danny, who has been in the Rangers team and has played in the Champions League.

“I’ve played alongside Danny for two years at Ibrox and also for Scotland Under-19s, and I get on really well with him, which always helps.

“I know how he plays like the back of my hand. He’s a confident boy and I’d like to think I’m confident as well, so if we got a chance to play in the first team together I don’t think we would be scared of it.

“Given the opportunity, I’d like to think we’d do well together for the first team. It is both of our ambitions and it would be good for us and good for the Rangers youth development system if it were to happen.”

Perry added: “It’s hard with the likes of David and Madjid in place, so it’s a waiting game.

“But you never know because there is talk of Danny keeping Madjid out even when he is back because he is playing so well, and of course there is the African Nations Cup coming up in January when Madjid could be involved.

“I’d like to think that, given the chance, I’d be capable of doing the same as Danny. I hope to go back to Ibrox in January because, the way things are, there are chances for the younger lads.

“I noticed there were three of the boys – Stephen Stirling, Kyle Hutton and Jamie Ness – on the bench for last weekend’s game against St Mirren and Danny and John Fleck played. It shows there is more focus on the youngsters now.”

And Perry is doing just fine at high-flying Oxford, who top the Blue Square Premier League.

“We have only lost one league game, which was to Mansfield, and last week we had a brilliant FA Cup result, beating Yeovil, who are two leagues above us,” he said.

“Now we’ve got Barrow, a team in the same league as us, in the next round so we are all aiming to get through that and hopefully get a Premiership club in the third round.

“Growing up, I always supported Manchester United, so a wee trip to Old Trafford wouldn’t go amiss.”

Equally, neither would a return north of the border.

Perry added: “I haven’t really had a chance to talk to the manager about what his hopes are for me because I’ve been concentrating on Oxford, but that’s something I’d look to do before I come back up.

“Coach Tommy Wilson tries to come down once a month so I keep in touch with him.

“I’d love to get back and play for Rangers. Two years ago I was involved in the first team a fair bit but the year after was a nightmare with injuries and I’ve struggled to get going again since.

“But watching Danny succeed has given me a bit more confidence. And, with my contract being up at the end of the year, it is an important time.”

Future partnership?

Lets hope so.

Come next summer when Weir retires and Bougherra leaves (which is looking very likely) hopefully Wilson and Perry can come in and save us a fair bit of money.

The same goes for the likes of McMillan, Loy, Ness, Wylde etc. Why spend money on players when we have our own right under our noses?

We'll still need to go out and sign a CB with a bit of class and experience, should Bougherra leave, and, this must be David Weir's last season!

I think weir would be a good coach after this season, but not a player.

I know wee Danny Wilson is quite good but I cant say Ive seen Ross Perry, is he the wee ginger guy? If so then he was excellent in the youth cup final against the tims. Reminded me of bomber-Brown

Dark haired, quite tall. Has very little pace, and is a bit lightweight.

Can't get a game for a Blue Square Premier league side.

Ah, in that case the chances are he wont be in the squad anytime soon.

Wouldnt mind trying a Little/Wilson partnership.

Maybe in the future if we still have no money we could have a backline of Mcmillan/Little/Wilson/Wylde.

He always performs for Scotland, but not getting a game for Oxford?! Something just isn't right for me. At 19 he should be able to get a game for a team that shite (see Kinniburgh who is done there and performing well).

perrys not a regular for a team in the 5th tier of english football? fs god help us!

Steven Kinniburgh has started 14 times for Oxford, at left back and in midfield, and it looks like he's doing quite well down there. Big step up between playing for Oxford and Rangers, but at least he's getting games, and impressing. He would have played more games, had he not been suspended - 2 red cards this season.

Rangers go down to watch them on a regular basis, it would be nice if they could give reports on the official website, but unfortunatley they don't, which is pretty pish tbh.

I was hoping they were both going to be total standouts in the league, i go and watch Ebbsfleet in the conference on occaisson, and the football sometimes is brutal, not for the feint hearted, it would be good if he had more game time but i am heartened by his u21 performances, playing against good footballers, not the conference hammer throwers, i for one wont be writing the player off until he has had a few first team games for us.

It is utter pish. Sometimes i wonder what we have a website for. It's usually the last place for any breaking news about the club.

I'd prefer Andrew Little to be used in a more attacking position. I don't think he's a defender.

he is a good attacker, how anyone can judge these young guys (who arent defenders which is made to look easier than attacking imo) after only a handful of games is harsh.

Nah, this will be his last. A blind man can see that he struggles badly at times. I would much rather see Boogie and Wilson in there, But i'm not sure if Boogie will play for us again, and even if he does, it will be Weir beside him.

Is Perry out on loan for the whole season?

I think he is only on loan until January.

Because it would be madness sending both him and Webster on loan for the full season when we knew Bougherra will be unavailable in January.
