Peasie 103
I've previously mentioned that Celtic's lowest TV audience for all of last season was 106,000 and that their opening game this season against Aberdeen was even lower at 91,000. Well, their audience has dropped even further as only 70,000 watched their game against Ross County. The Dundee United v Dundee had 75,000 viewers.I can't see Sky or ESPN being too happy as it doesn't represent good value for their advertisers. The highest so far this season was the 166,000 that watched Peterhead v Rangers. The highest last season was 851,000 that watched Celtic v Rangers. OlegKuznetsov 10,816
That's what happens when you treat the biggest club as if it were the smallest. This Sky TV deal will only get worse, as will the financial predicament of the SPL and its member clubs.

Tam3r0wn 12
I hope this teaches those fucking Luddites at the SPL a lesson. As much as they dont want to admit it, they need us. I will laugh heartily at any news which confirms my above statement.(Laughs heartily)
Peasie 103
Next Tuesday will be interesting as the figures released will includeInverness Caledonian Thistle v Celtic (25/08/2012)Berwick Rangers v Rangers (26/08/2012)EDIT : I suspect the Celtic game may have the higher viewing figures so I might just forget to post the figures next week. Well, if the Scottish press can be selective in what they report then so can I.
welsh103 12
See how we had to sacrifice our television rights to the SPL, do we know just how much this has been split?Leggo was saying the Tims get £2m whereas we get like 7k. Even though our games are getting the higher viewing figures.

Even though our games are getting the higher viewing figures. It doesn't matter if it is the Rangers (SFL) games that are being shown. It is an SFL deal. There are some saying that Rangers as an associate member are not entitled to a penny (however David Longmuir isn't that petty and has implied he will be fair with Rangers). The TV deal in effect is worth only £1M to the SFL for the first three years - they get £3M for 3 years and £2M for 2 years - but they were guaranteed £2M a year anyway under the original deal when the SPL split from SFL.So of that £1M it has to be split 30 ways - not a lot of money to each individual club. The SPL money from Sky is divided depending on league position. I think (from memory) 48% of the total is split equally and 52% on league position. The top club gets 17%, 2nd gets 15%, 3rd 9.5%......EDIT : If the SFL splits the money in a similar manner to SPL (based on league positions) then that £7,000 figure from Leggo could be right. The £2m to Celtic is wrong though. But we have to get it into out heads it is an SFL deal - not a Rangers deal - even if it is only Rangers matches being shown. If it is subscribers then the viewers would be more as there will be x2 or x3 in a subscriber's room . Trying to tally this up with CG presentation that said we had the 4th highest tv audience figures in the UK at average of 1.35million. That's why aim asking if the numbers only look a subscriber boxes online at the time but not the actual number of viewers..

Peasie 103
BARB is responsible for providing estimates of the number of people watching television. This includes which channels and programmes are being watched, at what time, and the type of people who are watching at any one time. BARB provides television audience data on a minute-by-minute basis for channels received within the UK. The data is available for reporting nationally for terrestrial, satellite and cable reception for both analogue and digital platforms and at ITV and BBC regional level.Viewing estimates are obtained from a panel of television owning households representing the viewing behaviour of the 26+ million households within the UK. The reporting panel of 5,100 homes is selected to be representative of each ITV and BBC region. The service covers viewing within private households only.Panel homes are selected via a multi-stage, stratified and un-clustered sample design so that the panel is representative of all television households across the whole of the UK. A range of individual and household characteristics are deployed as panel controls to ensure that the panel remains representative. As estimates for the large majority of panel controls are not available from Census data it is necessary to conduct a bespoke survey (the Establishment Survey) to obtain this information. The BARB Establishment Survey is carried out on a continuous basis and involves some 53,000 interviews per year. It is a random probability survey which means that every private residential household within the UK has a chance of being selected for interview. The survey ensures that any changes taking place in the population can be identified so that the panel can be updated and adjusted to ensure that it continues to reflect the television-owning population. In addition to being the prime source of television population information, such as the number of multi-channel homes, the BARB Establishment Survey also generates the potential recruits from which panel member homes are selected. When a household agrees to join the panel their television sets, PVRs, VCRs etc. are electronically monitored by a meter. Each TV in a home is connected to its own meter which holds an electronic record for the set. The meter is a small box which is put close to each television set and connected to it. The meter automatically identifies and collects information about the channel that the panel member is viewing. All panel household residents and their guests register their presence when in a room with a television set on. Each individual does this by pressing a button allocated to them on the peoplemeter handset. The metering system monitors all registrations made by each individual for each television in the home. The panel member does not need to do anything else for BARB to capture the viewing in their household everyday. Throughout the day the meter system stores viewing undertaken by the entire household. Each night between 2am and 6am the data processing centre automatically downloads the data from panel homes (a process known as 'polling'). This procedure is carried out on every panel home every day to produce live 'overnight' minute-by-minute television viewing data.VCR, DVDR, PVR playback and "catch-up" VOD services is reported if it takes place within 7 days of the original broadcast. This viewing (known as timeshift) is then added to the live data to produce the final, minute-by-minute consolidated audience, available 8 days after the original transmission date. Consolidated data is the ‘BARB Gold Standard’ that is used by the industry to report and trade on.Channels reported by BARB provide detailed timings of the programmes and commercials they broadcast. The records that this produces are then matched to the minute-by-minute viewing data to produce the BARB official audience estimates for programmes and commercials.Specialist research companies are contracted to provide BARB with the service: RSMB (responsible for panel design and quality control); Ipsos MORI (responsible for the Establishment Survey); and Kantar Media (responsible for recruiting and metering the panel, data collection and processing). For a more detailed explanation of how the audience measurement process works, please go to Television Measurement Service in ‘About BARB’. I read that the average viewing for games not involving Rangers averaged 189,000 last year. This year its around 50,000. Any truth in this. If its true then it means Bears were tuning in to all games last year. Now we're not. I think everyone has underestimated the power of the Bear. these figures are breathtaking. TartanTeddy 754
Looking (briefly) at the SPL fixtures Celtic look nailed on to win their next three games, looks also like 'challengers' will take points of each other. So in something like a months time the SPL race could start to look over. I'd imagine if that's the case, viewing figures will fall off a cliff. Shame. Reformation Bear 6,453
Very interesting. Hope you keep posting these details. As you say the numbers probably do not make good reading for Sky / ESPN execs. 2 points might be worth considering. (1) They stick with it even if the figures are low and the football product on show is crap to keep some sort of commercial relationship with the SPL ticking over in the hope that we return to playing in the SPHell and their good times return; and (2) they could move it to a comedy channel and maybe get more viewers that way. Wonder what escape clauses Sky and ESPN have in their contracts? For example, if the numbers consistently fell below average of 'x' then they'd exercise a right to walk away. There must come a point where the cost of setting up and transmitting at these awful football grounds start to outweigh the benefits.
