Mario Jardel :praise:

To this day i still wish we had signed this man he would have been the final piece in the Jigsaw imho .

Rangers have begun negotiations to bring Jardel to Ibrox. He is under contract to Porto for 5 years but has a clause which states he can leave for $8 million at the end of the first year if he chooses to do so. Walter Smith will watch the Brazilian against Manchester Utd on Wednesday.

23-year-old Brazilian striker Jardel is determined not to allow a second chance of playing for Rangers slip through his fingers. Walter Smith has made contact with Jardel's agent again, and will send a representative to watch him in Wednesday's European Cup quarter-final.

Last night Jardel said "I will be playing specially for Walter and for Rangers, and all the supporters who made my wife and I feel so welcome when we were in Scotland. Porto are a great young team, but they do not have world renowned players like Paul Gascoigne and Brian Laudrup. I could learn a lot from playing alongside these players and, together with Laudrup, we could make a partnership second to none when it comes to scoring goals."

"I still hope for a move, and hope to be part of the team that wins ten titles in a row. The dream of playing for Rangers has been kept alive in the past year and a half, and I haven't missed one of their games on television. I hope we can find a way around the problem of a visa, because nothing would make me happier than to play and score goals for Rangers and Walter Smith."

The work permit problems which ruled out Rangers last attempt to sign the player will still be a stumbling block because Jardel has not played in 75% of Brazil's matches in the past two years. The Scottish Football League management committee mmets on Thursday and it is believed that a relaxation of these restrictions on players from outwith the EU is on the agenda.

Jardel has been warned by Porto coach Louis Olivera not to speak publicly about the move until after they have clinched their league title. The player is now a regular in the Brazilian team so it is unlikely that the red tape which prevented him signing at Ibrox last year would still be a problem. Jardel said, "that day at Ibrox is one I will never forget. My biggest regret is that I wasn't part of the incredible achievement of winning nine titles in a row."

Of course we did not manage to seal the deal and bring him to Ibrox he went on to have a fantastic career though .

In the twelve year period between 1991 and 2003, the Brazilian forward struck an incredible 294 goals in just 310 games. In other words, that means that in 94.8% of all games over those twelve years, Jardel found the net. Things get even more astonishing if you take out the early years at Vasco da Gama, where he only managed a measly 22 in 39. Between signing from Gremio in 1995, and leaving Sporting CP in 2003, Jardel grabbed 272 goals in just 271 games, across three different leagues .

1996–2000Porto 125(130)

2000–2001Galatasaray24(22)

2001–2003Sporting CP49(53)

I think the cash spent on Flo should have been used to bring this man to Ibrox i honestly believe had he been in our team from 98 onwards we would have cracked the champions league . Where he scored 25 goals in 46 games in the Champions League making him the 16th best ever striker to play in the competition .

The fourth and final time this tragic love affair would arise would be in the summer of 2003. By now approaching the age of 30, Jardel had had his worst season since moving to Europe. Despite hitting 42 goals in just 30 matches in his debut season in the Portuguese capital, the striker had only managed 11 in 19 in his second term, despite admitting to depression at the turn of the year, and with his marriage falling apart. It is a measure of just how good he had been that 11 goals in 19 games was seen as a poor return. Nevertheless, that June, Rangers, the team with whom he had been to and fro with for the past 9 years, were once more interested in his services. Alas, this wasn't the same Rangers who could afford to spend lavish amounts on players anymore. £52m in debt, the club had put into place a series of cuts that would dismantle Advocaat's star-studded side. Out went the likes of Numan, Amoruso and Canigga; in came the likes of Østenstad and Vanoli. Yet, Rangers were still determined to sign their favourite Brazilian. It seemed as if this love story would finally have a bittersweet ending. The broken player signing for the club.

Sadly, the club were broke, and couldn't afford the £2m Sporting wanted, only being able to afford £1.5m. Tragically, just 11 days after Jardel had signed on for Bolton in August, Rangers received a cash windfall of £7.5m from the sale of captain Barry Ferguson.

To be fair, he had more than 2 great seasons judging by the stats you gave. His scoring abilities were still amazing when we were looking at him.

1991–1995 Vasco da Gama 50 (26) 1995–1996 Grêmio 42 (31) 1996–2000 Porto 125 (130) 2000–2001 Galatasaray 24 (22) 2001–2003 Sporting CP 49 (53

The fenian authorities in this country were never going to allow us to sign him.

Something stupid like only 10 work permits allowed for the whole Scottish league wasn't it? We only got one for Seb Rozental because the Trinidian guy at East Fife went AWOL and had it removed!
