Elgin City's scheduled SPL meeting with Rangers on Sunday at Borough Briggs has been postponed on safety grounds by Grampian Police.

It's believed the Moray club sold too many tickets for the match and the police decided to intervene, amidst fears that too many fans would turn up for the noon kick-off.

The news is an embarrassment to Elgin, who were hoping this fixture would gain them a high profile. The match was also going to be shown live on ESPN.

There was no immediate confirmation from Grampian Police, but Ross Jack, the Elgin City manager, said it was "unbelievable" news.

The police had earlier issued a statement, warning fans that they would not be admitted if they were intoxicated.
