RANGERS are on the brink of replacing Charles Green with Craig Mather – who joined them last year after investing £1million with the ousted Ibrox chief.

The news broke yesterday in another day of off-field carnage for the club. Boss Ally McCoist revealed he expects the budget he had agreed with Green for next season to be slashed in the wake of the Yorkshireman’s departure.

And a row was also brewing as fans reacted to the news that Deloitte – Green’s tax advisers and the accountancy firm who helped him acquire the club – had been appointed to conduct the independent investigation into his links with Craig Whyte.

It had been expected the board would move quickly to stabilise the club yesterday with the appointment of a temporary replacement for Green.

And it could yet be announced to the stock exchange tomorrow – but only if a divided board can set aside the differences engulfing a lengthy conference call yesterday.

Nottingham-based Mather, appointed director of sports development at the club in October and who runs a sports management company as well as a packaging firm, was at the game yesterday.

However the directors, with chairman Malcolm Murray absent on private business, failed to reach agreement on ratifying his

appointment on a temporary basis.

One faction had proposed the return of former chief exec Martin Bain to steady the ship in the interim period but that now looks unlikely to happen while finance director Brian Stockbridge is attempting to distance himself from Green and commercial director Imran Ahmad as the rift on the board widens.

Mather has been proposed as the middle-ground candidate. He’s the managing director of Simply Sport Management, who specialise in looking after young players, and also claims to run a successful horse-racing business.

However it’s the perception of his link with Green which is giving the non-executive members of the board cause for concern. There was more concern from the fans yesterday with the news Deloitte has been appointed to investigate Green.

Supporters Trust board member Mark Dingwall said: “They have a conflict of interest as both advisers in Green’s takeover and as his own personal tax advisers.”

The worry is that if links to Whyte are upheld then Green will be accused of lying to the SFA last summer in order to obtain a club licence.

And an Ibrox source told MailSport: “There might be some things that ultimately we’d prefer not to hear but we need it all out in the open.”

Any post that becomes available should be advertised, its top job paying top money you would be getting quality applicants, tried and tested in the field.

That process would be expensive, though to me it should be the obvious route - go figure

We will regret this sacrificing of Charles Green yet I reckon, looking excessively like a rather silly, reactionary move

The Mark Dingwall comment makes you laugh here is a guy who for years has profited off the clubs name selling his dodgy T-shirts with all the money going in his hipper and he wants clarity.

I've never understood why we let these parasites take away club money with their dodgy deals around the stadium.
