Apologies if this has been posted already. I came across this on FF and I know we get many causes etc to support but if anyone has a spare couple of quid then there is a wee Bear needing some help. The family are looking at all options from what I can gather and one of them is a specialist in Germany. (May I add that I don't know Corey or his family but I just think that this is a wee cause worth supporting)

http://www.gofundme.com/Corey-Can

Corey is 9 years old . He has a rare childhood cancer called rabhdoid sarcoma (kidney cancer).

He has been battling against this cancer since November 2012. The tumour cannot be removed until it has shrunk, this page is raising money to help send Corey and his family to a specialist treatment centre in Germany at Frankfurt University, which has successfully treated childhood cancers like Coreys. He has undergone 2 different types of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. He is still being treated at Yorkhill childrens hospital in Glasgow.

That's what I don't get about these pages.

I have said on here a couple of times before, so I won't again.

But the NHS fully paid for my mate, his missus and their wee boy to go to Florida for a month for treatment. Every now and then, you see these things pop up.

What made my friends wee boy so special that the NHS paid for him, yet doesn't pay for others?

Why does one part of the country get expensive cancer drugs when the other doesn't? Its the same NHS after all.

You assume logic and NHS go hand in hand.

Good to hear you friends wee boy got the treatment without the heartache of trying to raise money for it.

Ah, the old post code lottery.

I know what you are saying, but both these boys are getting treatment at Yorkhill, so I don't think you can use it in this case.

My friends wee boy got a lot of publicity in magazines and newspapers, maybe that was the difference.

It's things like this that make me even more angry when the Founding Fathers guys try and raise money for Yorkhill and Arseholes like the Gibson Street Gala Organisers stop them doing so....its not about bigotry, its about lives !

The boys are probably from different Health Boards and they will have different funding priorities and may have different surplus/deficits within their budgets. Some decisions are clinically driven but there is usually a cost/benefit analysis required. It sounds unfair but there is a limited budget to go round and the money may be deemed better improving/saving lives elsewhere.

That said there are plenty of things that could be done to free up resources for frontline treatment. Its usually not the finance or admin departments that bear the brunt of any cost cutting (turkeys voting for christmas etc.).

  • 2 months later...

I'm not sure if people are aware but I decided to have a wee look at that young lads fundraising page and, unfortunately, he passed away a couple of weeks ago http://www.gofundme.com/Corey-Can sad news indeed. The family and friends managed to raise around 25k in total and im sure all our thoughts are with them.

As mentioned, Corey passed away a couple of weeks ago and thought I would mention that Coisty attended the service, burial and the wake. A great gesture from the man and appreciated by the family and the community of Beith.

Thoughts are with the family during this tough time.
