Malcolm Murray in the middle as Rangers brace prepare for next round of power st

Recommended Posts

THE battle for Ibrox will erupt again today with a third attempt to oust chairman Malcolm Murray.

Murray’s position will be at the top of the agenda when the club’s warring directors hold their end-of-season board meeting this afternoon.

The London-based fund manager is not expected to survive this latest attack, having lost the confidence of almost all involved in the ongoing power struggle.

But moves could also be made to bullet non-executive director Phil Cartmell.

And if the Englishman is forcibly removed then former team manager Walter Smith, a non-executive director, may follow him out of the door in protest.

It’s understood ousted chief executive Charles Green will take part in the showdown, despite having resigned from his position in disgrace more than a month ago.

Green is scheduled to leave the Ibrox board on Friday, the final day of the month, but continues to play an influential part behind the scenes, to the annoyance of a number of the other main protagonists.

It has even been suggested Green could return to the club, possibly taking Murray’s position as chairman if the Yorkshireman and his allies win control of the boardroom at today’s meeting.

The Green camp, led by Rangers’ finance director Brian Stockbridge, are also backing the appointment on to the board of bus tycoon James Easdale and Chris Morgan who represents Blue Pitch Holdings’ investment in the club.

Where did this come from? Seems to be another dig

They keep on saying this shite. But i'm sure i read somewhere there is no chance walter smith will be resigning.

Where is it from? The daily rebel? It could only be they lying cretins that would still go along with "Walter smith will resign" pish.

This is boring me, Get Murray out of there and if the rumours about Walter are true then he can go as well.

Get the circus to fuck already.

And just leave the other clowns there to take all the money out when they feel like it? People might not like his silence at times but, he's the only one there that we can say he's not there for the money. He's not there to stab people in the back etc......

These guys were brought in by Green Why do they want to sack Murray and this other guy Phil Cartmell?

For all we know they could be the only 2 guys next to walter smith that are not only there for the money.

And thats why the others want them gone?

When was this?

Boss said a while back that Murray was a leak, and you heard Imran saying on that phone call that maybe Paul Murray was involved.

I don't think I've ever came across a chairman so silent either, apart from leaking info to his pals that is.

Well where has all the IPO money gone? Did Green not say we raised 32 million all in but it was reported that we raised 22million?

The board can't just "take money" when they like. If the directors are in it to make money, then first of all RFC has to make money (ie. profit). Murray could still be on the board as chairman and still get out-voted. His presence on the board has become an embarrassment. Clearly Green thinks so. It was unnecessary for the Stockbridge videos of Green to be released into the public domain but I'll wager that he sent them to Green and Ahmad to show the state Murray gets into with drink. I'll also wager that it was Ahmad who made them public. Either way, Murray has to go because he has been guilty of some other blunders and leaks.

So is phil Cartmell getting sacked or as suggested here in the telegraph just stepping down ?

Phil Cartmell, the former CEO of security and defence business, Vega Group, is to quit soon to attend to pressing matters concerning his business interests in Singapore, although it is understood that no date has yet been set for his exit.

Cartmell bought 25,800 shares at 76.5p when the club floated on the AIM market on December 19. The shares closed at 61p on Friday – a rise of 2p on the day – after the announcement that Charles Green would step down as chief executive, following a series of damaging developments.

Meanwhile, one of Cartmell’s fellow plc board members, Craig Mather, will fill Rangers' vacant chief executive role on an interim basis, while the club begins its search for a permanent successor to Charles Green, who quit last week. The agreement to put Mather in place at this juncture represents a victory for chairman Malcolm Murray, after the Telegraph disclosed that the former chief executive, Martin Bain, had support for a return to Ibrox in the same capacity.

Murray is believed to feel that Bain is tainted by his association with the tenure of Sir David Murray, who sold the club to Craig Whyte nine months before the new owner’s financial manoeuvrings tipped Rangers into insolvency. Bain, a member of the club’s independent scrutiny group at the time, in fact opposed the sale and was ejected from his position once Whyte took over.

It is also understood that Bain had the support of Walter Smith, who values his intimate knowledge of the labyrinthine politics of football in Scotland and the fact that he was in the habit of sitting down with Peter Lawwell – the Celtic CEO, who is widely regarded as the most significant force in the Scottish game – for monthly meetings with the status of an equal.
