The Widow's Son 399
It seems that most of the teetotal players have made a great contribution to the game. Is there a connection? I'm thinking of Davie Wilson, Kenny Dalglish, Owen Coyle, Danny McGrain and now Gareth Bayle. Recall meeting Davie Wilson out Cambuslang way many years ago and a finer man you'll never meet. Shetland Bear 433
Remember when Kevin Thomson got the armband after Barry Ferguson/Boozegate, it was reported he was a teetotaller. Ian Ferguson was surely one too.
geronimoo 1,474
There has been some players in the past who liked a drink and went on to become the best but I don't think you could get away with it nowdays, players like Best, Gazza and Maradona were were different class from the rest you could say they were not normal as they became so good. The Widow's Son 399
I've never agreed that Best or Gazza were truly great players. Did their careers last as long as they could have barring injury? Did they make the most of their talents or were their best days over by their late 20's? Did they end up pinching a living at the game? For that matter, Jim Baxter was pulling pints behind the bar when we won the ECWC in 1972 at the age of 30. Silky talents are delicate and fragile and should be nursed; woe to him/her that forgets this one.
Shetland Bear 433
Weir got the armband after Boozegate, Thomson was out for the seasonFair play. Certainly was mentioned as a successor though and that was a reason.
Craig53 326
Fair play. Certainly was mentioned as a successor though and that was a reason.Really rated him with us, fantastic work rate, he enjoyed a tackle a little bit too much though. Shetland 76
So out of thousands of good players to play the game, only a handful are teetotal. Don't think there's a connection at all.

DavidLamond 1
Sorry, meant to add: was it not Gavin Rae that got the armband after ferguson, or am I thinking PLG time?

Non_Sucumbi 876
Ian Ferguson said, "I only take a drink when we win a trophy, which is why people think I'm an alcoholic." Irony of that statement is he hardly touched drink during his playing career.
