BACK in the day, Rangers fans were used to watching their side lift title after title or lose out to rivals Celtic in a league flag race going down to the wire.

That's been missing these last few years with the Ibrox side having to make their way up from the very bottom of the Scottish senior leagues.

But after Tuesday night's 1-0 win over Dumbarton, the Gers are back in the top league after clinching the Championship title with four matches to spare.

And it sets up a very intriguing Premiership season starting this summer with Rangers once again locking horns with Celtic but the landscape has changed since the Light Blues were last there.

Despite the Hoops winning the league every season that the Gers have been away, Aberdeen have challenged them and in particular this campaign have ran them close. And there's still an outside chance they could pip them to the flag.

Hearts have had a very successful return to the top fold after winning the Championship, slotting into third place and owner Ann Budge has declared the Jambos will be preparing for an assault on the title.

Rangers have their work cut out if they want to get back to challenging Celtic - and potentially Aberdeen and Hearts - so we've taken a look at three key positions and players Mark Warburton could realistically sign in the summer in order to do just that:

Centre-back - Harlee Dean

Robbie Kiernan and Danny Wilson have been the main central defensive partnership this campaign and despite spells during the season of solidness and shut outs, the fragility shown when the going got tough is an indicator that this area needs strengthened for the jump in quality ahead.

Harlee Dean, a 24-year-old defender, has been with Brentford for four-and-a-half years and has played almost 200 games. He was due to be out of contract at the end of the current season but signed a two-year extension.

This could be a factor in whethe Rangers were to get the Englishman but having worked with Warburton in the years he was at Griffin Park, that could sway the player to be interested and the club to take notice - as well as an acceptable transfer offer of course.

He's at a good age, he knows Warburton, Warburton knows him, Rangers are back in the top-flight - Dean could be tempted away from London.

Defensive midfield - Kieran Lee

The midfielder has enjoyed a successful season at Sheffield Wednesday, the 27-year-old featuring 44 times in all competitions and a mainstay in the Owls' side, who have huge belief that they can get promotion to the promised land of the English Premier League.

Since season 2009-10, the Manchester United youth product has played over 250 matches stretching from Oldham Athletic to Wednesday and is a trusted individual in those areas of English football.

A natural holding midfield player, he would be the exact type of signing Rangers would require in the top league to protect a shaky defence under an expansive and attacking shape, and could provide cover for right-back also.

His Wednesday deal runs out next summer, though the club may be tempted to cash in on the player particularly if they go up through the play-offs and fancy going after a higher quality replacement.

Striker - Clinton N'Jie

This one would be ambitious move. The 22-year-old is a full Cameroon international, who can play as a centre-forward or from either the left or right wing, which is exactly the type of attacking versatility Warburton adores.

He signed for Tottenham last August from Olympique Lyon after scoring eight goals 33 appearances in Ligue 1 in season 2014/15 and has made seven substitute appearances for Mauricio Pocchetino's men this term.

Rangers have an array of exciting players in the forward areas but with Nicky Clark likely to depart in the summer and Kenny Miller turning 37 next season, the Ibrox side need someone other than Martyn Waghorn in that role.

Whether Spurs would be willing to let him go out on loan is a completely different question but, with Warburton's contacts at White Hart Lane and the success of Spurs loanee Dominic Ball in Govan his term, who's to say a year-long loan couldn't arise?

If we lose 5/6 players we need to bring in at least 6 new players + Crooks and Windass.

I believe at least 3 of these new players need to be experienced international class who will immediately strengthen the starting 11 and not just the squad.

3 established internationalists or equivalent to make up the new spine of our team, supplemented by what we already have and we will be in a good place.
