THE number of calls concerning domestic abuse cases almost doubled on the day the Glasgow sides met this month in their Scottish Cup semi final match.

THE OLD Firm cup tie was responsible for driving up domestic abuse rates by 43 per cent, according to police.

There were 210 reported incidents throughout Scotland on the day of the Scottish Cup semi-final on April 17 compared with 146 on an average Sunday.

Police Scotland confirmed that most of the alleged crimes took place in and around the Glasgow area on the day Celtic and Rangers locked horns.

Chief Superintendent Barry McEwan said abusers would be brought to justice.

He said: “Following the recent Scottish Cup semi-final between Rangers and Celtic at Hampden it is disappointing to see an increase in reported incidents of domestic abuse

"Dealing with this remains a priority for Police Scotland, one which we pro-actively addressed prior to this match taking place.

“Our officers have detected around 60 per cent of the domestic crimes committed that day and will continue to pursue the outstanding crimes and target those offenders that cause harm to their victims.”

He added: “Our priority is always to protect victims from potential harm and we have been directly engaging with known offenders to remind them of the consequences of their actions should they offend.”

Ch Supt McEwan, head of Police Scotland’s licensing and violence reduction division, claimed that excess drinking was behind most incidents.

He said: “Although we can’t attribute all of these incidents of domestic abuse directly to the Rangers and Celtic match, these figures underline that this event often leads to individuals having too much alcohol to drink which unfortunately lead to anti-social behaviour, violence and domestic abuse.

“There was a clear proactive strategy ahead of last week’s fixtures, which included working with partners to address violence and disorder, domestic abuse and licensing issues.”

Police made 18 arrests in and around Hampden and in Glasgow city centre on the day of the match, which Rangers won 5-4 on penalties.

Those arrested were charged with offences including sectarian, threatening or abusive behaviour, assault and running on to the pitch. A post-match inquiry into the use of flares and smoke bombs as well as offensive singing and banners could result in more arrests.

The crime claims by police come just days after Sheriff Richard Davidson said domestic abuse laws in Scotland are over the top and criminalising too many people.

The sheriff spoke out at Fort William Sherif Court after he admonished a woman who was locked up overnight after a shouting match with her husband in their own home.

He was slammed by Scottish Women’s Aid when he criticised the Government’s ‘fixation with domestic abuse’.

Time to out these scummy, rancid, lowlife cockroaches - they make me fucken sick with their paedo hiding, wife beating culture - and it is conclusive that there's no way that the team that won, would be up to this - it's conclusive it's they foreign scum.

So the polis were pro-active, which didn't do much good as the "strike" rate went up 43% - Failed badly

"Dealing with this remains a priority for Police Scotland", - Failing badly, especially having 146 cases on a normal Sunday.

Ch. Supt. McEwan put many of the cases down to drinking.

Now where have I heard of football fans actions being blamed on drink before ?, oh yes, throughout the whole Hillsborough affair - yet another failed badly.

As they say, love hurts mate.

With us back in the Premiership, she's resigned once again to at least 4 black eyes a season, no matter the result. She's a good sport though, takes it well and I do love her.

To be fair I'm sure there would be a few scumbags on our side who can't handle a drink and would have went home and got angry after getting an earful from the missus.

Not at all; 1million percent more likely it is a bitter tim cunt that got beat, fair & square.

43% is negligible to be honest and detracts from the more worrying figure which shows we have a problem with this in the country regardless of any events that take place. Now had it been > 100% increase then fair enough make a big deal out of it. It's the usual (negative) spin by the press.
