Dean Windass: Don't blame Rangers, it was your own [Accrington's] fault.

Dean Windass defends Rangers' contentious cut-price move to sign his son Josh

Dean Windass has told The Scottish Sun that if Accrington wanted a higher fee for his son Josh Windass, they should've offered him a better contract.

Josh Windass, 22, had been on the books with Huddersfield Town, but having been released by the Terriers, he moved on to Harrogate Railway - and his impressive displays earned him a move to Accrington.

With six goals last season, Windass emerged as one of the top young players in the Football League, but really exploded onto the scene this season.

Windass has racked up 16 goals for promotion-chasing Accrington, but he is in the final few weeks of his career with Stanley - much to the annoyance of many.

In January, the playmaker signed a pre-contract agreement with Rangers, meaning he will leave Accrington for Ibrox at the end of his contract this summer, having snubbed the offer of a new deal with Stanley.

Because Rangers are outside of England, Accrington are entitled to much less compensation than they would be if he had signed for an English club, and the deal has received criticism both from Accrington and from other executives in England, including Peterborough's Darragh MacAnthony.

Now, Windass' father Dean - who played for Hull City in the Premier League - has defended the move, telling The Scottish Sun that if Accrington wanted a higher fee, they should have offered him a better contract, and he advised his son to leave for bigger and better things.

"The way Josh was playing at the time and getting attention from a lot of clubs, I think Accrington made the mistake by not giving him a big, long-term contract," said Windass. "They offered a contract, but it wasn’t that good. If they were to give him a decent contract on a three-year deal they could have asked what they liked for him."

"They probably could have got £500,000-600,000. They offered him a contract which wasn’t appealing to his agent, to me and to Josh. That’s why I said ‘don’t sign that contract’, because it’s not worth it. I blame Accrington. It’s a bit of naivety from their point of view," he added.

To be fair to Accrington after having had a look at their fan forums recently they operate on short term contracts for everybody because apparently that's the only way they can do it with limited finances.  They can't afford to give a player a 3 or 4 year contract when he might turn out to be a dud.

But the obvious other side of the coin is if he turns out to be a good un and you only have him on a 12 month contract your options are extremely limited.  It has backfired on them in this instance and that's the breaks.  They're unhappy he is going to Scotland because that cuts out a development fee but that's also the breaks.

The transfer system is heavily loaded in favour of English teams in most circumstances and on the rare occasion it works in our favour I think it's hypocritical in the extreme to complain.  They wouldn't bat an eyelid if they were taking one of ours on a Bosman but paint us as the bad guys in this instance?  I think not.

They are one victory away from promotion.  Assuming they get it (and there is no reason why they would not win their last home game) then they will have won it thanks to the very significant contribution from the player.  The promotion will earn them more money.  The player has done his job - here's hoping he can be a real goal machine for Rangers.

What a load of bollocks. Why should we be criticised for operating completely within the rules

Hopefully we raid Peterborough and take their best players just to fuck their owner off too :pipe:

Im not going to bad mouth Accrington. Im glad we have these players, but if we were in their position we'd be pissed off. It's they way of the world im afraid. We try to do the best for our club. Accrington try to the best for theirs. Just because im glad we have these guys I see no reason to rub Accrington's nose in the dirt.

It's weird! You google Accrington & all the top hits are about the football team. It's the same for loads of towns in England, try it. Doesn't work for Scottish towns, so the conclusion must be, the English diddies are much more important than ours.

Acrimonious Stanley only have themselves to blame....fucking sick of this non story continuously resurfacing....Rangers have not acted improperly or illegally!! Makes you wonder who's behind this apparent agenda driven drivel, and why!!

"Received criticism from Peterborough executive Darraggghhhhh MacAnthony!!! ??? Could the answer lie in there somewhere? ???

Total non event, free transfers are part of the game, if they didn't like it then they should have offered contracts before the 6 month point when clubs could talk to them. It paints us in a bad light again hence the mhedia recycling it with a barely different angle each week.

edit: it took them until 29th march to give Billy Kee  an extension but it's until 2018 at least they have learnt their lesson.
