westenclosure2008 793
There are still doubts over the defence and we haven't really been tested in the last two games to know if it has improved. I don't think Clint Hill is the greatest player but our shape seems better and the confidence of Kiernan and Wilson seems better playing alongside Hill. Anyway what I'm trying to say is that I don't see any glaring weakness just now. I see it as our most well rounded squad in years. I've never been so eagar for a season to start. *pointless post I know but just getting my first out the way
RDFM 3,809
It's basically only centre back right now we've got quality and depth in every other position. You could argue for a striker but for me it's the back we need to bolster

Another striker would be welcome but I think Waghorn will be even better this year. I've heard he's spent the close season working on his game with the Superior Striker course and specialist fitness coaches. Only worry is that a team down south puts an offer in. jintybear 8,536
It's good that Hill is telling the defence where to position themselves. I also noticed Gilks doing that last night, he seems to communicate with the team a bit better than Wes does. Warburton said he would be putting a full strength team out against Burnley so that'll be a good indication of where we are IMO
montana100 335
Last 18, tend to over play too much, old school, take a shot, make keeper work and follow up. Hopefully we'll get someone to run that channel, too much dragging left or right. Over all happy
SeparateEntityMyArse 53,608
Not weak as such but agree with MW could do with another CH. For me the concern is not creating chances that are there at times when we should, going sideways or back instead. I was delighted to hear MW comment on that pre game last night saying all the possession is great but opportunities to attack goal are being missed. So I'd hope we work on being more aggressive at getting in on goal going forward. On the whole delighted, just need to get our fitness up in the next 2 weeks. ger4life_1872 29,430
Hopefully as we get into the season we will become more clinical , overall we look in really good shape though and the competition for places should keep everyone on their toes
B1872 20,648
We are a starting centre back and striker away from challenging seriously for the league IMO. Still think we'll concede against better opposition and struggle to put the ball in the net with the chances we'll create.
He's blue he's white 717
Would like us to get the opposition defenders turning more.
Smile 26,600
Defence is still very weak and slow, upfront we still need a quality striker.
Drunk and disorderly. 14,310
Hard to tell when we are playing diddy teams who barely make it into our half. Seems as if MW is giving all our players some match time to improve fitness and promote competition. Hopefully this will mean our defence is much less laid back and they will be challenged for their positions. Our main weakness may be a lack of a tactical plan B. Certainly was last year imo. Frustrating to see us leading matches (usually by a single goal) then giving possesion away because we are attacking too much with 10 minutes to go and conceeding a goal(s). If you don't adapt you set yourself up for failure. Hopefully lessons have been learned.

Burnley will be the real indication as to how far we have come, IMO. The way we started against Motherwell was alarming tbh, but first real match back, so sharpness may have been an issue. big blue Fin 3,724
Hard to say after just three games where to be honest we haven't really been threatened that much. The defence may be a little shaky still, although Clint Hill looked solid last night. Warburton has said he still wants another defender so he's obviously aware of our frailties. What a difference it makes to have a man in charge who can see what the team needs.
Inigo 32,526
The worst single piece of defending I've seen in a long time at Hampden in the cup final last season represents our biggest weakness. I'm worried that the gaffer still seems to be standing by him. Hope he knows what he's doing.
Corky True Legend 2,682
I was one of the many shouting about the need for another striker. I now feel that Dodoo may well fill that gap and so now think one more quality defender is all we need to dominate this season. Even without that, I am still more confident than I was at the end of last season.

Honestly gives me shivers thinking about our defending that day.
Courtyard Bear 41,357
Defence is still a weakness Motherwell showed us that, on top of that the only weakness we have is ourself the second half last night is the perfect example if we don't keep that high tempo going we become ordinary. harlands plater 16,957
We'll need to create and put away more chances in the league games, because we will concede at the other end.

But so many lacked sharpness especially Tav after 3 weeks off. We only had ONE friendly too in 3weeks and to be honest we'd been off the boil for a few weeks before the end of the league. I know it's new to him too bit imo MW must take a share of blame for the conditioning of the players in the final.

Just in terms of this thread though, Kiernan doesn't know what he's doing, exemplified in that one god-awful, schoolboy defending moment. But then, you could argue that's as much a failing in MW as it is in Kiernan. He's the one that keeps playing him. Hopefully he sees something many of us don't, but as far as I'm concerned just now, centre half and Kiernan especially, is our weakest link.
