The Widow's Son 399
Watched a few tributes to George Best recently and I had forgotten how heavy the pitches used to be. Derby County's was bad and both Manchester teams had very heavy pitches. It would seem that you rarely/never see this type of surface these days. Is drainage so much better or are the groundsmen scientists? Remember a good few Rangers games on a heavy pitch - an Old Firm game at Ibrox which ended in a 2-2 draw, mid-1960's, a 4-4 draw in the early (?) 1980's. siddiqi_drinker 14,635
Is true, pitches seem better drained than back in the 70s which must help teams like Rangers who move the ball around. Remember players kicking the ball and it getting stuck in a mud pile. Noticed t the Access game and away at Dundee both clubs watering the pitch at half time, murder for the subs trying to warm up. Is this a new trend,? Stealth global warming thread
Courtyard Bear 41,357
Better drainage and better grounds men, a lot of today's pitches are part synthetic including ours which also helps.

Ibroxholm 2,276
Clearly there have been advances in how the groundman tends the park but in those days Ibrox was used week in, week out by the first team and reserves, sometimes even to train. Although the pitch may suffer a bit, would like to see a return to playing reserve (under 20s) games at Ibrox. Seems ridiculous that a stadium like Ibrox only has around 20-25 games a year. Players don't even train their anymore so the stadium is a white elephant most of the time. Would like to see it used far more often.

roboscot 1,176
Anybody remember this game against Osasuna in the pishing rain, mid 80s, we won 1-0 but lost the tie. The ball was just stopping on parts of the pitch and the amount of water running off the roof of the Main Stand was unbelievable.
