I met up today with a pal of mine, a Celtic fan, Pat. Good guy, I have a lot of time for him. Hes an old guy now and I asked him if he knew of Sammy Cox.

Well, he did indeed !! He saw Sammy play many times and when I asked him 'was he good' ? he replied 'better than good'. Pat spoke very highly of Sammy and had nothing but admiration for him. He also said Rangers were running riot at the time, Sammy being a big part of it.

I told Pat of this thread (he doesnt understand the internet) but when I told him of Sammy, he wishes him all the best and hopes he picks up soon.

Now, thats nice.

Good to see that Rangers is still in the hearts of so many old players :)

I sincerely hope he gets well and even gets well enough to attend a Rangers game once again. I'm sure he'll get a hell of a welcome by the club (or at least the fans).

well said Jelle (tu)

Thanks gersgirl for letting us know about Sammy. Very sorry to hear he's having troubles, and I sincerely wish him all the best. Great to read this thread, it really shows how much respect all Gers supporters (and even some of our opponents' fans) have for him, even though many of us did not get the pleasure of seeing him in his heyday.

My pal Pat, off the top of his head came out with this team. He wrote it down for me. He thinks its pretty close to the team Sammy played in.

Niven, Cox, Young, Little, Baird, Stevenson, Mcmillan, Brand, Scott, Miller, Wilson.

Sorry had missed this thread...

Please pass on my personal good wishes and that of the RST.

I'm also a member of TBO and have asked the guys if the Sammy Cox legends banner can be displayed in December in order for a few photos to be taken and sent to Sammy and his family to cheer them up.

:)

Lads are going to put it out on Saturday - hopefully along with another surprise message banner.

I'll see if it can be put out again on January 5th as well... :)

Well done Frankie. Well done to TBO aswell. :rangers:

We will need to take pictures so that Gersgirl can show Sammy and his wife.

As some of you may or may not know, Sammy has lived here in Canada since the late 60's. He is held in very high regard by all of the clubs in NARSA, and has participated in many of the various clubs functions, including many NARSA conventions. Unfortunately with Sammy's advancing age, his health is not the same as it used to be and his short term memory often fails him. One thing he never forgets, or tires of speaking about, are his days with Rangers and "MR Struth" (and it is ALWAYS MR!) Sammy has told me about such things as the day he shuffled nervously into Mr. Struth's office to invite him to his wedding and almost fainted when he stated he would be honoured to attend. He told me about how strict a disciplinarian Mr. Struth was (Sammy was spotted simply holding a pack of fags belonging to a pal and was cut from the team that day) Most of all he would talk about how proud he had been, and how much he had loved playing for Rangers. I loved that, after Sammy was voted into the Rangers Hall of Fame, he would ask us, while showing us his wee statue, "now what am I supposed to do with this thing?" At the same time you could see in his face how proud he was to have "that thing". Few could ever deserve it more.

Sammy has this past week, had to visit some medical specialists about a problem he is having with his eyes. A member of our supporters club who is a very close friend of Sammy and his wife Jean, picked Sammy up to take him to his appointment. In preparation for these appointments Sammy had proudly donned his SFA blazer and Rangers tie in order to look his best. That really says something doesnt it?

Sammy will be needing minor outpatient surgery mid December to correct the problem with his eyes, so if everyone could spare him a wee thought it would be "simply the best".

Sammy's wife Jean will be joining our club for our Christmas outing on December 1st, unfortunately Sammy's health prevents him from being there himself. Jean is one amazing lady herself and we are all looking forward to her spending the evening with us. If there are any messages anyone would like me to give to Jean to pass on to Sammy I am sure it would make him VERY VERY happy. If I had enough messages for him I could put them into a wee book for him.

Great post Gersgirl - please could you keep us updated ?

No well done for me required mate. I only passed on the news and the guys who deal with the huge banners are the ones who deserve all the praise... I know how hard these guys work on match-days and they are so selfless it's humbling.

The more photos we can take though - the better to send over to Canada.

:)
