RANGERS Football Club will create an Official Rangers Fans Board in Season 2014/15 which is another positive step in its Ready to Listen supporter engagement initiative.

An external, independent nominations committee has been set up which will review applications and nominate a shortlist of supporters for election to the Fans Board. The nominations committee includes former Rangers Captain and Hall of Fame member David Weir, Scottish rugby international Alastair Kellock, Reverend Stuart MacQuarrie and five Rangers supporters.

A series of focus groups comprising a cross-section of supporters took place at Ibrox in early June and these discussions, plus feedback generated from our Ready to Listen Fan Surveys, have helped shape the direction of the Club’s fan engagement strategy and ultimate confirmation that the Club and the fans will introduce an official Rangers Fans Board in the coming months.

Improved communication with the wider fanbase is important to supporters and the Club and the appointment of a nominations committee is the next stage in the process of creating a democratically elected Official Rangers Fans Board in season 2014/15.

Reverend Stuart MacQuarrie, who has conducted services to commemorate the Ibrox Disaster, will act as Chairperson for the nominations committee, Club legend David Weir will also sit on the panel along with Glasgow Warriors and Scotland rugby star Alastair Kellock. They will be joined by Rangers supporters Tom Mowbray, Mhairi McKenzie, Melville Curry, Ross Hardie and Holly-Jade Johnston, fans who have played a key role in the Ready to Listen campaign since its launch in February.

The high-calibre panel will review applications from Season Ticket Holders and Club Members (further information will be released at the end of this month on the Club’s new membership) then decide on a final shortlist of candidates for supporters to vote for election to the Official Rangers Fans Board.

Full details on how Season Ticket Holders and Club Members can submit applications will be confirmed in the coming weeks but the Club is totally committed to improving communications with all supporters and the Official Rangers Fans Board will provide the platform for a more strategic dialogue with fans worldwide.

Rangers Chief Executive Graham Wallace commented: “It is clear that the wider fanbase is fully supportive of the creation of an Official Rangers Fans Board so I am delighted to confirm this tangible step towards its implementation with the announcement of a nominations committee.

“The committee will select a number of candidates for election to the Fans Board they feel best placed to represent the interests of supporters around the world.

“Supporters have a key role to play in helping achieve success for Rangers on and off the park and the introduction of a Fans Board will provide the platform for more structured dialogue as well as providing the Club with a better understanding of the issues and concerns of the fanbase.

“Full and meaningful engagement is crucial to the Club’s development and the creation of an Official Rangers Fans Board will give supporters the voice they have been craving.

“Furthermore, this two-way dialogue will provide the opportunity to give greater insight and feedback to fans on decision made and greater transparency regarding key issues that affect our supporters.

“The committee members all have different areas of expertise but they are all united by the common goal of helping take Rangers back to the very top of Scottish football and they will work hard to identify the best candidates for election.

“Once the nominations are confirmed it will be down to the fans themselves to decide on exactly who will represent their interests, via an online vote, and I hope this process underlines our commitment to improving communications and engagement with our supporters.”

Good move.

Once this is up an running any splinter groups will just be seen as nuisances and profiteers.

(tu) the next logical step is for the Board to make a statement saying they no longer recognise any of the other fan groups, and any correspondence will only be done through the official ans board now.

I'm sure this is good news. It will put the Fans' Board in between the Board and wider fan groups. If set up and operated well it should be a good channel for much improved communications between the Board and Supporters. I'm also sure the new Fans' Board will have its work cut out to act as an effective representative body for the Support so here's hoping that those who nominate themselves and who are selected are up for the job and doing it for the sole reason of Rangers first and Rangers only.

Who knows, the next step could be for the Chair of the Fans' Board to attend for relevant parts of the Club's Board meeting which would increase the opportunity improve comms direct to / from the Board.
