Experience vs Youth

For about 2 years now a regular debate or argument on here has been about our spending big wages on experienced players from the top division to guarantee us successive promotions to the top flight

In two successive seasons we have for the most part overlooked our younger players for the more experienced pro's of the game if you will, even in a season where ally couldnt recruit as much given the transfer embargo, we still had a pretty high average age

For 2 years now we put up with poor to garbage performances, with the odd occasional top drawer performance thrown in, a lot of us clamoured for the younger guys to be given a chance, their hunger and desire could make the difference, many others claimed the performances were so poor because we are playing shite opposition, there's no pressure in the games etc etc

Well surely now we must realise that the over paid, under perforrming experienced pro's simply arent good enough or simply dont give a fuck, we were worse than rank rotten today, we were pretty awful in the hibs, hearts, falkirk and for the first half the QotS games

yes we turned raith over, beat ICT at ibrox with a strong if nothing special performance, but have a look at the deciding factors in the good and bad games

Nicky Clark

Lewis MacLeod

Fraser Aird

only MacLeod of they 3 played against hibs and hearts, Clark and Aird came off the bench and tured the falkirk game in our favour (one assist and one goal between them) we cuffed clyde when macleod and clark were arguably our best players

Today we lost both MacLeod and Clark to injury, and boy did it show, we were simply fucking brutal, no invention, no energy, no pace, no ability on show whatsoever, we didnt deserve that point today in all honesty given who we are, what team we actually put out and who we were facing

Aird had a poor game, but he never hides, never shirks from wanting the ball, he'll continually try and try again

Whereas the likes of Black, Law etc all seem to go missing when the going gets tough,

We could be doing with more drive and desire from the younger guys to really kick us up another level, pity most are out on loan at the moment

The likes of Gallagher and Gasparotto will come back from their loan spells, hopefully invigorated and better prepared for the toils of first team football.

Throwing in a bunch of youngsters with little to no first team experience now is not the answer. Them having got that experience over the last couple years is a different argument.

Like B McKay, K Naismith, K Hutton, K McAusland and Scott Gallacher?

Frankly in the last few months and years, the kids have been the only shining lights at the club, from McKay bursting into the first team, Gallagher last season making a great impact, Aird holding his own in the team and MacLeod looking like he could be the best ever talent to come out of Auchenhowie.

The players we have with first team experience, here or elsewhere, have been the let downs if truth be told. A who's who of mercenaries and imposters.

McCoist would rather play 'experienced' players who are shite rather than take a chance on a youngster. i'm amazed how consistently poor our older players are

Agree. I would have sympathy for Ally sticking to the experienced players if they were quality. Unfortunately our older players are nothing exceptional so playing the younger lads is not such a gamble

age is irrelevant the only barometer should be talent. youth for youths sake is pointless .

plus we do give youth a chance its complete crap that we dont coming from people who dont know what they are talking about.

ajax aim for 3 youth players to move into the first team squad every two years. we played 11 in the first team and have moved 5-6 players from youth to first team in that time frame.

It's the standard of youth talent nowadays. Now I'm not having a go at wee MacLeod because I rate him but ask yourself this ( and this is for the older bears) - think of Ian Durrant at 20 yrs old and compare him to Lewis? That alone shows you the drop in standard in Scotland in the last 25 yrs we simply do not produce enough good players anymore.

ajax havent had two free years to give the youth a consistent run in the first team, they bring through 3 every 2 years playing in the top dutch league while trying to qualify and compete in europe

we simply have had to beat part timers over the course of a season

im not championing them to be thrown in now as that wont do anything, but we both seem to agree that they should have had more experience over the last 2 years

Guys like Gasparotto and Mcausland should have been chucked in to the team when we got papped down to the bottom instead of signing the likes of Argyriou and Cribari. I can see the point that we needed numbers but the young boys could and should have been utilised better. It baffles that we've sent half of them out on loan this season when they would probably improve our team right now. Can you imagine the life Gallacher or Mckay would have injected into the game today had we had the option to bring one of them on with 20 mins or so to go?
