WadeWilson 4,670
Dave Mackay has passed away age 80. Square-jawed, barrel-chested hardman. An old-school Scottish football icon. Maybe some of the older Bears can share their memories of his playing days... I heard Tom Miller on the radio eulogising about Mr. Mackay. It really was high praise indeed from Tom; great words and a fantastic tribute.Certainly, that famous image of him will live on forever. Billy Bremner got lucky that day. George Best: "Dave Mackay was the hardest and bravest player I ever played against. A real lionheart."
ALerone 633
Growing up in Derby early 80's the names I heard most were Clough, McFarland & Mackay. My old man (centre back) Big Dave was his hero down at the old Baseball Ground. It was my Dad that taught me all about Rangers so I assumed his rating of a player would also be sound. Rip DM. BlearyEyedBear 4,148
It says a lot about the man, that he is regarded as a legend at Hearts, Spurs and Derby.

CraigG 56
He was a massive influence on Liverpool and England's Tommy Smith, who idolised him. Both of them were true hard men but they could also play.

Tiger Shaw 30,348
Love reading about the old school players from an era when football was a real mans game, guys like him unfortunately wouldn't last 5 minutes on the park in the modern game, likewise the modern player wouldn't last five minutes up against players like him back in the day.RIP Big man

delparlane 5,639
Larger than life; the word legend gets bandied about a lot, but it truly fits when describing him. RIP big man.

He grew up supporting them as a boy, played for them, and would've managed them, if it weren't for a last-minute intervention from Cloughie, who managed to convince him to sign for Derby instead. McKay resented Rangers after that. Incidentally they both played in the same Army team.
Skol 401
Interestingly, he didn't really like the portrayal of himself in that famous photo. He worried about being seen as a bully when that's the last thing he was. He was hard but fair. Bremner (well known as a dirty wee bastard) had just deliberately kicked him twice on the leg he had recently broken so he let him know what he'd do to him if he tried it a third time. Still, iconic image.

To balance that they had great players in Terry Cooper, Eddie Gray, Paul Reaney, Peter Lorimer and Mick Jones.
