Canada 1-0 China.

Christine Sinclair rolled the penalty kick into the corner of the goal, and Canada earned a 1-0 win in the opener of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Saturday in front of 53,058 fans at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.

Game wasn't all that great but it'll do for starters.

p.s. Notice Scotland didn't make it.

I'm sure they lost to a men's under 16 team or something similar, the level between the top Female teams and the top Men's team is enormous.

That said, I think it is improving all the time and probably best to judge it on its own merits rather than compare it to the Men's game.

Some of the goalkeeping though :anguish:

The Swedish women's national team played an AIK Stockholm U17 team a couple of years ago as well and were beaten 3-0. This despite the fact that the boys were forced to play with 10 men after it went to 1-0 to even things a bit.

The women's game is of a good standard technically, but the simple fact is that if every player in the opposite team is a good few yards faster than every player in your team and a good few inches taller and a good bit heavier, which they will be by the time they're 15 or so, you won't have a chance.

So you're right, it definitely should be judged on it's own merits rather than in terms of physical mismatches. And yeah, some of the goalkeeping is weirdly bad.

The standard isn't that great overall as of yet, although, has improved.

Some of the keeping is hilarious - Bell's clanger wouldn't have looked out of place.

Due to the standard, players of genuine quality seem to stand out even more so. There's no too ways about it, the girl Marta from Brazil is one heck of a football player. Light years ahead of the competition.

Jonathan Pearce is an awful, awful commentator.

The number of times he's been corrected by the co-commentator in regards to his interpretation of something that's happened on the pitch in the England game tonight is ridiculous.
