Dave King: Rangers Need a Coach.. Not Another Advocaat, Smith or McLeish

MARCH 6TH, 2015 KYRAN WALLACE FOOTBALL, RANGERS0 COMMENTS

Dave King has given his biggest indication yet of who’ll be Ally McCoist’s successor for the Rangers hot seat.

South African-based millionaire King jetted in to Glasgow last night ahead of today’s EGM and brought plenty of positivity for the Rangers support. Something which has been hard to find at Ibrox over the past three years.

On arrival at Glasgow airport, King spoke with the Scottish media and outlined his plans for the appointment of Rangers next manager:

It’s a huge priority and ive thought about it quite a bit, because I think what we need is more of a coach.

If you look historically at my involvement at the club, we had Walter, Advocaat and Alex McLeish and they actually were managers, where the teams were of reasonable quality.

I think for the re-build of Rangers there’s not a squad to manage so we would need more of a coach who can work with young players and develop them in training.

We’re going to have to be very careful to select the right individual.

This will surely be music to the ears of the Gers faithful who have endured the past few seasons of older players getting a push ahead of the younger crop who could, no doubt, handle the standard of football Rangers have played at in their journey back to the top flight.

The bookies’ favourite to take the manager’s office at Ibrox remains as ex-Bayern Munich boss Felix Magath.

Talkingbaws.com exclusively revealed Magath was in talks with Rangers. He met with Jim Traynor who represents King’s PR in Scotland and the German has since become a shareholder of the Light Blues.

Ian Cathro was another name in the hat for the job. An approach was made for the Valencia number two but we believe this was made by Sandy Easdale, who no longer has a controlling say in what goes on at Rangers. Cathro has since been tipped to return to Dundee United as manager with speculation that Jackie McNamara may be wanted elsewhere.

Well Oleg.. Looks like you were correct about reactions :-)

King is right imho. Get in someone that can actually 'coach'.... and implicitly... get in a DOF.

I doubt Walter was a good coach... but he was a great manager. Got the most out of his players. A great equalizer in that sense.

"I think for the re-build of Rangers there’s not a squad to manage so we would need more of a coach who can work with young players and develop them in training"

Is this indication that the out of contract players will be released and not replaced with incoming players?

I do like the second part of his quote above.

I read that as Ian Cathro

After working for a local youth coach in Dundee, Cathro became the head of Dundee United's youth academy at the age of 22. During his time with Dundee United, he also worked for the Scottish Football Association's local youth programme] In 2012 he became the assistant manager of Portuguese club Rio Ave. In 2014 he followed Nuno, his manager at Rio Ave, to Spanish club Valencia, where he also became assistant manager The two had first met at an SFA coaching course in Scotland in 2009. Cathro has been linked to becoming Head Coach at Rangers Football Club.

He's right what he's saying. Advocaat and Smith had class players that were the finished article. At this moment in time we don't and we need a coach to make our players better than what they are. (tu)

Or just get them back to where they were before McCoist took them backward. (tu)

Just needs a tactically aware manager in as an interim for the rest of this season and use the summer to source the right manager and let him have the rest of the summer to bolster the squad with something like a £6M transfer pot which with some decent youth and a few high profile loans will see us sustain a decent challenge next year. All this needs to be underpinned for future seasons with Murray Park coming up to scratch and the padlock taken of the gym doors and we shouldnt be investing any cash in players at the end of their careers - bring them in on loan if required and bring the right experience but save the money for 22 to 27 year olds that if coached successfully can give us a return on our investment.

I'd love us to try Cathro. It's a gamble, but we could really make something here with our facilities and his track record. The best teams outside the top European Leagues have to rely on youth and scouting - having a manager like him with solid youth/scouting philosophies added would be the perfect long term solution for the club.

Hes right, we need a coach who can mold 1st team players and youths into playing a certain style as a unit, who can develop players. Not someone who can use a chequebook well. We wont be signing any superstars, it will be up to us to make our own.

Ally wasnt a coach, he thought he could just throw money at the team. McLeish and Walter did the same but they actually knew what they were doing and how to build a team around certain players, we need to build a team from scratch and a coach that can get in about it can acheive that better than a suit with a big voice.

If Norwich don't get promoted I like Alex Neil.

No budget at Hamilton and worked wonders with youngsters. As a player he helped mould Mccarthy and McArthur as the old head/captain in midfield next to them. Knows the Scottish game obviously and has been promoted from div 1 as a manager, then had them in the top 3 for most of the early part of this season.

Speaks well and doesn't seem fazed by his Norwich move. He has seen off Mike Phelan already and is very much his own man.

He's also a local guy in his mid 30s who I'm sure would look at Rangers as a chance to cement his reputation as one of the best up and coming talents about.

They (Norwich) must be looking at automatic promotion and if they manage it he will end up wanted by bigger Premiership teams. We need to move now if we don't want to miss out.
