Ozblue 4,331
In another thread about Gedion Zelalem a poster said the youngster on loan from Arsenal reminded him of Bobby Russell. If he can play as half as good for Rangers as Bobby Russell did then I will be happy.
One Jock Wallace 858
Yep, Bobby was a player. Will never forget being late for a game against them & walking down the Govan front to get to my seat when Bobby was going down the same side skinning 2 of them & made it look effortless before releasing the ball. Great wee player
1873bear 192
Never seen that PSV game before, looked a cracking game, great viewing before we head to Dumfries.
Copland bear 7,966
It was big Tam no4 then Bobby no8 that were my favourites. What about Cooper? I was only 8 or 9 and loved big Tam as a hard man and Bobby had such a good footballing brain.Greig took over a really good but ageing squad and like Ally was not up to the task. Copland bear 7,966
Never seen that PSV game before, looked a cracking game, great viewing before we head to Dumfries.I remember as a wee boy these goals were in football books magazine etc, showing who was were and broke the moves down, said it was great modern counter play or something.Psv drew 0-0 at Ibrox and were also undefeated at home in Europe for something like 5 years that night, was one of our greatest performances ever in Europe.Certainly in my top 10. Budswiser 196
Went to school with Bobby and played beside him in the schools team. Always a stand out even at that age.
hammer93 15,057
Fantastic player who never received the recognition he deserved I.e Scotland caps, I still think souness let him go to early as he was a thinking mans player.

That PSV side were no mugs as they had the two Van De Kerkhof brothers, Ernie Brandts, Jan Poortvliet and a certain Wim Jansen who many years later became manager of the tarriers. It certainly was a classic game and our guys played their hearts out. Orange&Blue 130
Bobby was one of classiest players to pull on the blue jersey, loved the guy, was one of my all time favourites. I think he came to us from the junior league.
thedarvelmarvel 796
i always liked bobby but felt there was something missing from his game but after the cup final against aberdeen when he started showboating in extra time and lost the ball leading to them scoring the winner sad way to end his ibrox career he never came out with rest after the medals were handed out i think big jock must have gone mental i think it was his last game
jcb 1,167
Class player who made the game look effortless at times. Suffered alongside Coop under John Greig who favoured more defensive players in tough away games.rather than flair players. At times he seemed to glide over the surface and i'm sure when he played on snow he didn't leave footprints.Very underrated player imo and was unfortunate he played in a ere when Scotland had some decent midfielders.Met him when he was in charge of one of the youth teams a few years ago and he was as classy off the park as he was on it.. jamess 3,422
I remember this game and that team as though it was yesterday. The last great achievement of a very good team against a very good PSV team. For me greatest ever goal. Russel was a very good player in a very good team and was and served the club well. Don't as yet see the similarity or impact.
Ibroxric72 199
That stirred some great memories as a kid. A superb win and brilliant goal from Bobby against PSV who were the Dutch masters at the time.

gmcf 34,138
I thought Bobby Russell was at Ibrox until Souness arrived , could be wrong though. As other said , he just oozed class. Certainly don't remember him showboating.
AlCapone 7,678
I know a couple of wives of Scottish players who were at ibrox when sourness arrived, said that when butchers, woods etc arrived they were encouraged to socialise with all the new arrivals. They went for a couple of meals and the bill for food and bubbly per couple paid for by the players was more than the Scottish boys earned in a week. Bobby Russell was one of them. sandyinroyalblue 16,478
Bobby Russell had a subtlety to his play that set him aside from the rest unfortunately in the 80s getting stuck into the opposition seemed to be more appreciated than Bobby's style of play.
