***Spain v Italy***

Recommended Posts

can spain finally deliver in a major championship? like the dutch and croats, they go into their quarter final with a 100% record and will start as favourites. they are expected to field the same team that beat semi finalists russia and sweden.

as for the italians, they did just enough to qualify from the group stages after unconvincing performances against holland and romania. donadoni has a selection headache prior to the game aswell. keeper and back 4 will be the same while in midfield ambrosini will come in for gattuso and it is expected that roma's alberto aquilani will take the place of pirlo to play alongside his roma colleague, daniele de rossi. up front, antonio cassano could be dropped, while misfiring luca toni will look to finally get his first goal of the tournament.

predictions? i think the italians will miss pirlo pulling the strings in midfield and i dont see panucci and chiellini being able to deal with villa and torres - especially if those 2 are on form.

Spain 2-1 Italy

Mon the Azzurri! :)

Got my Cousin coming back tonight, used to always watch Italy games together. I think I'll change into either my Azzurri strip or Brescia strip after dinner.

Roberto Donadoni has condemned Luis Aragones’ controversial statements that Spain will “die on the pitch†if necessary.

The Iberian Coach is notorious for his outlandish speaking style and shocked journalists in his Press conference when he said: “I am certain if they needed to, they would die on the pitch.â€

The comments did not sit well with Italy boss Donadoni ahead of tonight’s quarter-final in Vienna.

“I don’t like this type of high-impact statement,†he told RAI television. “Having said that, obviously everyone is free to use whatever terms they want.â€

Aragones was trying to charge up his squad for this match, as Spain have not beaten Italy in competitive matches for 88 years.

“I do not believe in the tradition factor, but rather the concrete facts and quality players can put on to the field now,†insisted Donadoni.

“We have to give 100 per cent and give the best performance we have in us.â€

Andrea Pirlo and Gennaro Gattuso are suspended, so it is increasingly likely Alberto Aquilani will start in midfield.

It is something of a gamble, as the Roma youngster is relatively inexperienced at this level and has not played a single minute of Euro 2008 so far.

“It will not be his first important game. All he has to do, like the rest of the side, is express his quality.â€

Fernando Torres admits the training ground row between Sergio Ramos and Luis Aragones has damaged Spain’s morale.

The Coach had strong words with his defender in full view of fans and journalists this week in preparation for the quarter-final against Italy.

“What happened did take some of the good humour and morale out of the squad,†confessed Torres on elperiodico.com.

“It broke the harmony within the group. Certain things should be discussed only inside the locker room.â€

Despite that argument, Ramos is set to start in defence this evening as Spain take on the Azzurri.

Italy can take heart from the incident, though, as Spain are clearly nervous at the prospect of facing a side they have not beaten in competitive matches since 1920.

Will he bark in disapproval if the referee gives Spain a last minute dodgy penalty which wins them the game?

Rino barked at Zenit scoring the 2nd goal in the UEFA Cup Final when we watched it back, so he might actually.

Of course the 'truth' hurts.

Being British annoys me more than Rangers and Scotland playing pishy football.
