October. Given the recent successes and the rise in the use of digital channels, it would be good if the BBC started covering more of these sports in-depth.

Eurosport provide very good coverage.

I would like to see something like Grandstand back on our TVs or I'm sure the BBC could have something similar to BBC Alba but for sports.

A surprising win for Team Movistar in the Team Time Trial which was the opening stage of the Vuelta e Espana. Last year's winner, Juan Jose Cobo takes an early advantage.

1. Movistar

2. Rabobank @10

3. Omega Pharma Quickstep @10

4. BMC @10

5. Sky Procycling @12

100th edition hits "XXL mode"

The official presentation of the 2013 Tour de France may still be a month away but there is already speculation that the mighty Mount Ventoux will return to La Grande Boucle next season.

It will be a big year for the Tour in 2013 as it celebrates its 100th edition and French news outlet Le Dauphine Libere  is reporting that apart from the 'Giant of Provence' appearing for just the third time in a decade, the classic peak of the Tour, L'Alpe d'Huez will be conquered not once but twice.

As already reported, the 2013 Grand Départ will take place on the island of Corsica . The Mediterranean island host three stages in what will be the Tour's first visit to Corsica, after having visited all the departments of mainland France, since its inception in 1903. The race will then move to Nice for a team time trial.

According to Monday's report, Ventoux will be climbed at the beginning of the third week. In its last appearance in2009 , Ventoux proved decisive for Alberto Contador (Astana) en route to general classification victory, while Juan Manuel Garate (Rabobank) triumphed on the demanding stage.

On July 18, the Tour hits "XXL mode" according to the report, with two ascents of L'Alpe d'Huez. Starting in Gap, the peloton will head up the infamous 21 switchbacks before travelling back down via the Col de Sarenne on soon to be asphalted roads. The stage will the reach a crescendo with another ascent of L'Alpe d'Huez.

Also the penultimate stage is believed to be an uphill time trial to Semnoz.

The presentation for the centenary Tour de France takes place in Paris on October 24.

Sky to release Cavendish for free

Mark Cavendish has apparently negotiated a free release from a three-year contract with Sky that will allow him to find a new team for next season. Cycling Weekly understands the sprinter has avoided the team's initial demand of a seven-figure buy-out and his exit is set to be finalised in writing by the end of this week.

The departure after just a season with Sky will allow Cavendish to further discussions with other interested parties including Omega Pharma-Quick-Step.

Cavendish's free exit is contrary to weekend reports that suggested Omega's bike sponsor, Specialized, would cover a release agreement of €1.2 million.

The Belgian-based squad has no overt general classification rider on its books and can support the Manxman and his Tour stage win and green jersey aims.

Austrian Bernhard Eisel follow ed Cavendish to Sky, following the demise of HTC-Highroad at the end of last season, but is negotiating a contract extension having been an instrumental road captain at the Tour de France, which team-mate Bradley Wiggins won, as well as a handy classics rider.

Not a great surprise, but it will be a big blow for Sky.

Mark Cavendish leaves Team Sky and will ride for Omega Pharma - Quick-Step next season.

Mark Cavendish will ride for Belgian team Omega Pharma-QuickStep next season, Team Sky have announced.

The 27-year-old from the Isle of Man expressed a desire to move on 12 months into a three-year contract, believing Team Sky's stated ambitions and his own no longer matched.

Earlier this week Cavendish was preparing for a second season with Team Sky after protracted talks over an early termination broke down, but now the Manxman will get his wish to move on.

A statement from the team read: "Mark Cavendish is to leave Team Sky to join Belgian team Omega Pharma-QuickStep ahead of the 2013 season."

Omega Pharma-QuickStep have long been favourites for Cavendish's signature and a place was made vacant on their roster when Levi Leipheimer was sacked for his role in the Lance Armstrong doping scandal.

The Belgian squad and their sporting director Brian Holm, who worked with Cavendish at HTC-Highroad, have the desire and capability to make the Briton their Grand Tour leader and prioritise stage success.

Cavendish, a winner of 23 Tour de France stages, had no such guarantees at Team Sky, whose July win in the French event with Bradley Wiggins heightened their desire to target overall victory in all three Grand Tours.

Cavendish won the world title in September 2011 and joined Team Sky a few weeks later after leaving the disbanding HTC-Highroad team, which he led and where he won 20 Tour stages in four editions of the fabled race. He also won the 2009 Milan-San Remo Classic.

Cavendish signed for Team Sky, featuring many friends and colleagues from the British Cycling system he came through, believing it would be possible to challenge for overall glory and the points classification's green jersey at the Tour, a prize he won in 2011.

Wiggins was the undisputed leader in July, with Cavendish's aims an afterthought, and became the first British winner of the yellow jersey.

With the Tour won, Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford said Cavendish, who is fourth on the Tour's list of all-time stage winners behind leader Eddy Merckx on 34, could leave or stay.

The British Cycling performance director said in July: "He is a prolific British winner and on the one hand we would love to have a prolific British winner on the team.

"We will still be a GC (general classification) team and if he felt, or if it was felt, that he would like a dedicated team around him, then he is quite within his rights to want to do that.

"We wouldn't fall out about it, there wouldn't be an issue about it, but we are very proud to have him on Team Sky, he is a fantastic champion and long may that continue."

Cavendish, who was disappointed after missing out with another major objective in 2012, the Olympic Games road race, broke his silence on the matter on the eve of the Tour of Britain.

He said: "I have seen some stuff about a release fee but I don't think Dave would do that. I hope that is just a bit of speculation (about the fee) and everything can work out amicably for everybody."

Cavendish won the final stage of the Tour of Britain to Guildford, his 15th success of the season in what would prove to be his last race in a Team Sky jersey before switching squads for 2013.

After the TdF 2013 route being announced with the crazy climbs, it's going to take a super effort from Team Sky to get close to Contador. He was practically taking the piss in the Vuelta this year in the hills.

Anyone think Froomy can do it?

He will need to improve a hell of a lot in the lead up to it. I was very impressed with Rodriguez at the Vuelta, but it was a fine comeback from Contador - if he was clean!

Hope he was clean, surely he wouldn't be that stupid again?

It would have been a cracking battle with Wiggo this year if he had competed.

Did you see the Sky Atlantic five-part documentary on British Cycling? Well worth checking out if you didn't.

Brailsford comes across as a genius mentalist!

I've got the series recorded.

Brailsford is so driven and nothing or nobody gets in the way of the program that he sets out.

A genius mentalist is a very apt description! :D

Anyone going to be watching the Giro?

Sure am, mate. It's the one that Wiggo really wants so will be interesting to see what condition he's in.

Flat opening stage in Naples rather than the usual time trial to kick it off so looking to see if Cav can take the Pink jersey on the opening stage and see how good his Omega-Pharma-Quick-Step team are.

Anyone going to be watching the Giro?

Me. :)

Do you think Wiggins is going to hustle Froome? Seen a lot of chat about him being short of fitness, and that he is using the Giro to get himself straight for TdF, but also trying to overcook the pretender. Should be fun.
