What sort of money do these guys get? Wiggins will be worth a fucking fortune now.

This is the best I could find:

80% on average €100k [range 50-150]

10% on average €250k [range 150-300]

7.5% on average €500k [range 300-750]

2.5% more than €1m

The top riders getting anything between €1.5m and €3.5m. Wiggins on about €2m. These figures are salaries and don't include any endorsements.

Team Sky spent £1.4m on 'bikes and performance equipment' in 2011, just under 10% of their total budget.

You can now buy 5 grand bikes in Halfords. Nuts.

Not a bad living, lots of hard work but it would be an enjoyable lifestyle for a young man.

Agreed. Like everything rlse the glamour at the top doesn't reach too far down the scale. Many of the riders in the lower Tours more or less ride for expenses and free bikes. They do get hotels, meals etc. paid for.

UCI to request additional medals for 2016 Olympic Games

By: Daniel Benson Published: August 7, 19:39.

Will cycling  be allocated additional track medals for the 2016 Olympic Games ? Well, if the UCI has its way it will, with the governing body set to petition the IOC for another medal ahead of the Rio de Janeiro Games.

Cycling  currently has an allocation of 10 track gold medals, with five for men and five for women. They are then split, with three sectioned off for sprint events and two for endurance. However, the UCI would like to see parity, with either the points race or the individual pursuit brought into the fold as an individual race for both men and women.

Cyclingnews understands that the Madison, an Olympic event in 2008, is unlikely to be put forward. However, the UCI's thirst for medals could also see the omnium 'tweaked' with the pursuit or points race dropping from the current six-event Omnium programme.

"We'll evaluate how the programme has worked here," Pat McQuaid, president of the UCI told Cyclingnews.

"Obviously we'd like to have more medals and more events, even if we can use the same quota of athletes; the IOC also evaluates the international audience for the cycling events. We'll put a proposal to the IOC for more medals."

"The four events that are there will stay there. The fifth event, the omnium, well that we'll evaluate how it's working and maybe tweak it to improve it, but in principle from what I understand from the technical team, it's a good event and it's worked very well.

"McQuaid and the UCI want to appeal to the professional road cycling  ranks, whose riders have only two events to consider under the current format. The return of the individual pursuit would likely be the most popular decision amongst athletes and under the quota system, they would be allowed to target two endurance events . "At moment we have three sprint events and two endurance events.

I would like three sprint events and three endurance events and that way we keep the attraction for road riders to be involved in track racing, which is important," McQuaid told Cyclingnews.

"But we then have to go to the IOC and ask for another medal. It would be coming from within the quota of athletes we have, but it's up to them. There are other sports as well looking for other medals. Up to now the IOC has resisted but we'll try and make a strong case based on the success here."

"It could be the points race, individual pursuit or the Madison although I doubt the Madison because it's very difficult to follow on television to a world wide audience."

"You use the athletes that you've got but it makes it more attractive for the road riders because they have the chance of three medals and would get to take part in three events. We don't want to take any events out. We've currently got 10 medals. We want to keep it like that and make it possibly 12."

American Tyler Hamilton will be stripped of his 2004 Olympic Games time trial gold medal after admitting to doping during his career. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will announce on Friday that it has stripped Hamilton of the title, and will award it to former silver medallist Viatcheslav Ekimov, according to a report filed by the Associated Press.

American Bobby Julich will move up to silver medal position, with Michael Rogers of Australia gaining bronze. The move comes before the IOC's eight-year statute of limitations expires at the end of August.

Hamilton failed a test for homologous blood transfusion at the 2004 Vuelta a Espana whilst riding for Phonak, the same year that he won the Oympic TT title. At the time, Hamilton claimed complete innocence but came clean in May 2011 when he admitted to doping  during his professional cycling career during an American television interview.

Would love to see them bring back the individual persuit! Love that event.

Would also like them to increase the rider quota and get rid of that awful 1 rider per nation rule they introduced.

Anything to stop GB cleaning up!

Absolutely loved the track cycling at the olympics, was incredible to watch. But is it actually shown on TV other than the olympics? anybody know?

would quite happily watch it regular.

I think the European Championships are not too far away....? Not sure.

Probably on Eurosport or something.

October. Given the recent successes and the rise in the use of digital channels, it would be good if the BBC started covering more of these sports in-depth.

Eurosport provide very good coverage.
