Rangers v Moscow Dynamo 1945

Recommended Posts

I was watching a documentary about the cold war at my home in Switzerland and was happy & surprised to see The Rangers get a good mention.

After the war in Nov 1945 it was decided by the British and Russian allies, they would have a "good will" football tour to celebrate the unity between east and west and the struggle and victory over nazi Germany.

It was said that Dynamo were the greatest club to have visited our islands. It was the first time British crowds witnessed players warming up before games and Dynamo impressed with their fast passing. Dynamo even brought their own specialised diets with them. A lot of what they did back then is what we see as the modern game and was sneered at by the FA at the time.

Was also interesting to see the jersey Rangers wore for the match was hooped. Was this an away top? I wouldnt mind seeing it come back.

Anyway we done ourselves proud against one of the top teams in the world at that time in front of 90,000 at Ibrox.

Results:

Chelsea 3 - Dynamo 3

Cardif City 1 - Dynamo 10

Arsenal 3 - Dynamo 4

Raners 2 - Dynamo 2

I have a badge from what was the Soviet Union which commemorates that game. Got the badge in 1985 and can only assume it was for possibly 40 year anniversary or something of that ilk. To be honest I've no idea. It says football history on the bottom of the badge.

Glasgow 1945 between the flags and Glasgow Rangers - Dinamo M under the flags.

There's a book on the Moscow Dynamo goodwill tour called Passovotchka. It's a good read. One of my favourite stories was that Rangers signed a player - Caskie (?) and the Russians kicked up a big fuss believing that they were just strengthening the team for the game. The game nearly didn't go ahead, but Rangers agreed not to play him. Anyway, the Russians requested and were taken on a visit to the workers at the shipyards in Govan. At one point the Russians asked for a translation of some graffiti, thinking it was some left wing slogan. It was in fact "Who's afraid of Caskie ?"

Just saw the medal. I think it says 'International Match Glasgow Rangers - Dinamo M" round the outside, and Glasgow 1945 in the centre.

The only part I wasn't 100% was the top two words. The rest I had noted in my post. This game was also notable for Dynamo bringing on a substitute but not taking a player off!!! I believe Torry Gillick brought it to the attention of the ref.

Was reading about this a few months ago. Apparently MD felt duped when they played Arsenal and Stanley Matthews ' guested ' for them. It was at a time propaganda was important and superiority in this tour would play a part in that . I think they felt Rangers were going to try the same .

Great story mate. Think I'll look that book up. The politics of the goodwill tour are interesting considering it was at the very beginning of the cold war

i have that programme. it has been passed down through the family. would like to know how much its worth but don't think i would ever sell it, and keep passing it down.

One went on Ebay recently for about £40 - http://www.ebay.ie/itm/1945-GLASGOW-RANGERS-V-MOSCOW-DYNAMO-/360879396207

It doesn't look in great condition though, and I'm sure I saw one recently on another auction site go for about £90.
