THE second-placed team in the SPL this season will be guaranteed European football even if they suffer a Champions League qualifying defeat thanks to new Uefa rules. Both Celtic and Rangers have crashed out of Europe at the first hurdle in recent seasons after suffering humiliating defeats to Artmedia Bratislava and FBK Kaunas respectively. But in future a club failing to make it through to the group stages of Europe's premier club competition will drop straight into the Europa League which is set to replace the Uefa Cup. That will mean the second-placed club in this country will not be left kicking their heels for 12 months after failing to qualify.
