Maradona - In Life Best Player You May Ever Have Seen

I always thought that Pele was the better player. The amount of goals he scored, and the stuff he could do with a ball was unbelievable, at the time. I remember, as a young lad, going out and trying some of the tricks, moves, and skills Pele had performed, without a great deal of success. But I was a tryer, and watching him perform inspired me.

One of two games I went to at Hampden that summer where I witnessed something very special indeed.

Davie Cooper's goal in the Drybrough Cup Final, and Diego Maradona's first goal for Argentina.

Brilliant stuff.

I'm jealous, you lucky man.

El Diego was definitely the best of my lifetime... And Cooper is arguably the most gifted player ever saw in the Scottish game.

Maradonna was the greatest player ever ,Messi a close second . Pele was not even the greatest Brazilian,Garrincha was. While I was in Argentina I did a wee pilgrimage to where he was born ,visited most of the places he had played in Buenos Aires including that godawful club Boca.

My memory at hampden park v argentina scotland intoduced to the kidand it will be the only game in my lifetime to witness just how good this pocketof talent was .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BgnbsgnBes

Was at that game as well, was excited about seeing this new wonder kid that the south Americans were raving about, unfortunately I also chose this day to try out Eldorado for the first time as a tipple before the game, I knew I had taken to much when the stadium started to spin and I passed out, apparently I slept though the whole game and my mates had to carry me back home.

I was raging with myself when I recovered especially when I heard from my mates and read the papers the next day about how good this kid was, still annoyed with myself as I write, I had the chance to see Maradonna live and feckin' blew it.

PS. I never drank the El D ever again.

Wonder how Maradona would cope without defenders diving in at every opportunity.

Seems to be an argument for him being the best ever based on this type of no-nonsense defending that he faced all the time. Good dribblers want this sort of defending.

All of the old-timers, great as many of them were, benefited from most people only ever actually seeing a handful of their games, on the biggest stages. Pele or Maradona may well be the best player of all-time but their stature has reached almost mythical proportions because they played in a time when, for most people, it was genuinely unusual and exciting to get a chance to watch them play. The only people who got to watch them week in, week out and see the average games, the games when they couldn't really be arsed or didn't have their shooting boots on or had post-Christmas fatigue or whatever, were the journalists and the home fans. The former were paid to sell the idea of mythical greatness and the latter paid to believe it, because they love their heroes. The likes of Messi and Ronaldo and, to a lesser extent, the superstars of the previous decade or so, have every touch of every game scrutinised. When they are bad or mediocre it gets leapt upon for criticism. When they are incredible it becomes boring and repetitive. They don't have the same romance. They can't win. Then again, they are hundreds of times richer so maybe they can live with that :P

In the end, whether someone like Messi is actually better than Maradona and Pele or not, he could be ten times as good as both and still most people of a certain age wouldn't admit it or even believe it in their hearts (there are obviously notable exceptions like Lineker and Souness).

No way. Has Messi ever taken Argentina single handedly (no pun intended) to a world cup win ?

Maradona still the greatest i ever did see.

Ah, the old World Cup comment

Maradona might have had more natural talent, but the stats don't lie

Messi has surpassed Maradona IMO

And I grew up watching Maradona in his pomp
