Strange start to the Scudetto

What a bizarre start to Serie A - all the main sides have misfired - Fiorentina, Juve and Roma hovering in the middle of the table after patchy starts.

Inter 3rd after inconsistence away form despite 100% at home.

And Milan...

This season began with high expectations but then a dreadful start left them with only Cagliari propping them up.

Finally a wee run began with the win in the Uefa Cup and then the big Milan derby triumph.

So what happens? The worst premier league side in Europe, Cagliari, without a point to their name and only one goal...and Milan go there and draw.

A truly shuddering result up there with Empoli last year and Bologna this.

This Milan side is suffering from brutal inconsistency. At times they could well be the best team in Europe - they showed that kind of form against Inter. But this week the shambles of yesterday's display and more dropped points show that the run may not have been an improvement, but a blip.

But then you see Juventus travelling to Palermo and losing - they're easily as bad/inconsistent as Milan.

With their rivals misfiring so regularly, Inter should walk this league simply thanks to their strength at home. They probably won't even need a great away record to win it.

No side in Serie A has yet to hit a consistent run of form - Lazio drew at home to Lecce and Napoli also dropped points at the weekend. It makes for a good competitive league, which everyone wants to see. Also, Palermo won 2-1 in Turin which makes their win even more impressive. Roma also lost away to Siena at the weekend.

You would expect Inter to do something especially with the slow start, but they did lose 1-0 to AC and get destroyed all over the field in that game. Serie A gets worse and worse every season IMO

I think it's a lot better this year.

More competitive than any other league going by early form.

Have you saw the German league ? Bayern are like 9 points from first and Hamburg are top. Werder beat Bayern 5-2 at Allianz Arena and a few weeks after that Stuttgart go and beat them 4-1  it's crazy.

I'm with Watford on this one.

A league whose normal heavyweights are this patchy discredits it to an extent.

Every big league needs its regular big teams. Even if only 2 or even 1 are actually showing their normal form.

To have all the major sides, Milan, Inter, Juve, Roma, Lazio, and Fiorentina erratic means that the normal hierachy is on its head and the normal allure of the league is replaced by the big sides being humbled and a top half of the table which looks very unglamorous and downright unnattractive.

Italy needs its Milans, Juves, Inters at the top. Not Udinese, Palermo and Atalanta.

Hopefully the league regains its normal shape.

Could you imagine a Premiership in which only Chelsea were in the top 4 or so? Right now it's Chelsea Liverpool and Arsenal. Change that for Chelsea, Bolton, Everton and Newcastle.

Sure, it's more 'interesting' but it would do the league no good in terms of its health.
