The Arsenal - Top Of The Table At New Year

On talksport half an hour ago there was an expert on talking about them, and he says, if I heard right, that puma will be the kit supplier next year from now on, and its the biggest deal in the country.

5 year deal worth £170 million. Excess of £30 mill a season... Still a bit away from city, but they could become serious challengers again.

Arsenal is a massive club, its just a matter of time and not IF. The stadium set the club back on the pitch, that was the difference. Now Arsenal has huge revenues, its a different ball game now. Chelsea and City won't be able to bully Arsenal in the transfer market if they want a player.

Certainly looking rosy for them right now. Problem though is that their defence is schizophrenic and lacks entirely in depth, their goalkeeper isn't great, Wilshere looks pretty uninspiring, and they don't have one quality striker beyond Giroud.

Ozil was a lovely signing but still missed the glaring holes in the team. A great start to the season but I fully expect them to go and get beat by a mid-table team and fall somewhat by the wayside.

Certainly a well-run team, and propserous right now. Long way to go before they can consider themselves contenders though

They ahd the second best defensive record in the league last season behind City

No defence is perfect but it is far from this tripe you hear from MOTD or any other lazy pundits when they talk about it. Its much better than some make out. Mertesacker is certainly a much better defender than some people think too. Positionally he is very good and intelligent as a defender, him and Koscielny are a perfect partnership.

Due to differing factors, no more so than United losing 5 on the last day of the season.

Arsenal fans continue to use this line about the second best defence, but they clearly have issues in that area, no idea why their fans refuse to accept it.

Oh well why agree with the facts eh :pipe:

Arsenal go to a more pragmatic approach and get moaned about. Its less flashy and more efficiency. The defence for starters is more better protected with cover from the midfield area. Ramsey is a good example with the amount of ground he covers, incredible energy.

last season it was wengers insistence of playing wilshire, arteta and cazorla that opened their backline to any maurauding midfielder

arteta is the better of the 3 at sitting yet wenger shunted him further up while wilshire got the sitting role, something which he couldnt do

it came as no surprise when wilshire got crocked and rosicky came back and arteta sat deeper that arsenal clicked and stormed to the top 4 slot (tu)

Your pathetic statement didn't warrant one. Oscar, Wilshere, Toure and Ozil just to name a few are better than Ramsay atm.

Im an Arsenal fan and even i think Ramsey is better than wilshere and Ozil just now on form, hes changed almost every game hes played since the start of the season, all the others havent to the same degree

Stats can be decieving. I guess it's more about how often their defence lets them down. Frankly, its more about how often the entire team lets them down over the past few years. They just tended to crumble at times. they are incredibly patchy. Can be solid for 5 wins in a row and then get mugged off away Norwich or the like.

Wenger has been pretty unfortunate to be fair. He's always had a patchy goalie but his defence, as I said before, are pretty schizophrenic. Maertesacker looked slow and cumbersome in his first few months there but for the last year/18 months has been quietly excellent. On the other hand, Vermaelen went from being one of the best defenders in the league, to being pretty dreadful. Ditto Sagna. Koscielny is so hit or miss. Excellent at times but makes daft mistakes and seems to give away an inordinate amount of penalties.

I don't think its a bad defence but there are times when it is hugely inconsistent. They also have little to no depth there, which is the big problem they'll face (and have been facing for years)
