Andrew Cole retires

Some players are remembered for their individual brilliance, others are remembered for their ability to work hard and make the most of the chance you've been blessed with. In Cole's case, he certainly falls into the latter. He was a raw diamond when he arrived at Old Trafford from Newcastle, but Ferguson's managerial ability coupled with Cole's attitude turned him into one of the most feared strikers in Europe.

I've seen many great strike-partnerships over the years. Mutu and Adriano, Shevchenko and Rebrov, Totti and Batistuta, Anelka and Bergkamp and recently, Raul and Van Nistelrooy. The partnership that Cole had with Yorke however, towered above the rest in my eyes.

They were almost telepathic in Utd's treble season in 99, bagging 53 goals between them and destroying teams like Inter Milan, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus. A truly breathtaking combination, who even beat Utd's Hughes and Cantona combination to the crown of "best ever Utd strikeforce".

The 2nd video is quite possibly my favourite display of striking ever and the fact that the Catalunian's gave them both a standing ovation just shows how good it really was. It wasn't scored against "EPL dross" either, it was against the then La Liga champions who boasted a defence featuring the likes of Albert Celades, Michael Reiziger and Sergi. The perfect goal.

Andy Cole, Andy Cole,

Andy, Andy Cole,

He gets the ball and scores a goal,

Andy, Andy Cole.

What a goal, What a goal,

He gets the ball and scored a goal,

Andy, Andy Cole.

Pretty much sums up Andy Cole - 121 goals in 229 games for Manchester United in a partnership with Dwight Yorke that was deadly, especially season 1998/99.

He also formed a pretty deadly partnership with Peter Beardsley - Cole scored 68 goals in 84 games for Newcastle.

A hugely underrated player who should of featured for England more often.

He was just unlucky with the other strikers that were around at the time, real 'Golden Age'.
