  1. Goss is the kind of player we need to be buying because (1) He has performed very well in our league and clearly has the potential to get even better (2) It shows all the doubters that we are back where we belong - a big club and capable of attracting players from teams that get an average home attendance of 14,600 and could be playing in League 1 next season. We can because we are Rangers.
  2. I was disappointed when the board said Murty for the rest of the season. But I'm having second thoughts now. Murty is continuity - he knows the club and the players inside out. I think he's taking us in the right direction. Even if we were to attract a household name (not likely) or 'one of Europe's top young managers' (PLG anyone?) who's to say it won't all go tits up with a new boss, new staff, different training regime and new tactics? Yes - Murty is a novice but everyone has to start somewhere. Maybe he is just the jammiest bastard because he gets to start here. I believe the results against the mhanky mhob will decide his fate. Takes points (hopefully one win at least) and avoid a doing in the remaining OF games and the job will be his.
  3. Imagine that, PSG going bust, being knocked down the leagues and having to play France's equivalent of Arbroath or Elgin City.... hmmmm
  4. Man Utd would love that. That's what the tournament set-up is designed to deliver: teams with huge financial clout and a big international fanbase dominating the competition. Last thing Uefa wants is a CL final between Steaua Bucharest and Anderlecht.
  5. Since the 1980s the system for European competitions has been drifting towards maximising revenue and keeping the bigger clubs in the contest right through to the final stages. It's nearly perfect for that now. And boring as fuck. Automatic qualification for 'big teams from rich leagues' Any number of qualifying rounds to keep small teams out and A mini-league system in both competitions to minimise the risk of a shock one-off result that knocks out a 'big team'. They'd be better off just getting every team in Europe to submit their business accounts and then let the four with the biggest turnovers play semis and final.
  6. If you're left-footed enough, you're good enough!
  7. Hodson's played his last game for us. Completely out of his depth. I'd take any left-sided player from the crowd before I picked Hodson.
  8. Windass provokes strong opinions. Has clearly improved in recent months and is now playing a position that suits hm better than wide left. His main strengths are: (1) anticipating/running onto a ball and (2) shooting. When he's doing those things well he seems vital to the team. But when these aren't clicking he's a frustrating passenger. His passing can be erratic and if things aren't going his way he drops out of game completely. He does not seem to have a great work rate to compensate on the bad days. The strange thing is the way he seems to struggle more in home games. I wonder if (behind all the shooshing the crowd BS) he is actually lacking confidence and really feels the weight of the shirt at Ibrox. I'm hoping yesterday was a blip, his performances have been on the up.
  9. They will drop points - their second choice keeper looks poor. The real question is do we have the mental strength to win consistently against everyone else and to take the points we need off them? Murty is leading us in the right direction: when we're playing well it's a pleasure to watch. If we'd started this season with the squad we have now (and no Pedro) I believe we'd be clear at the top of the league. Title this season? Heart says maybe, head says probably not. But at the very least we'll be giving the unwashed something to worry about and be seting ourselves up for a proper challenge next season.
  10. Windass certainly seemed to be struggling with that simple task....
  11. A successful team needs players that opponents look at and think 'oh fuck it's him - he is going to rip the piss out of me and score.' We have lacked that for so very long and I think Cummings may be one that fits the bill. So much of football is about what goes on inside a player's head when he's under pressure... if Cummings can mess with the heads of the other team's defenders then that's alright by me.
  12. On current form: McCrorie, Jack and John. McCrorie looks comfortable on the ball wherever he is on the park. The boy has class. Hope he's fit for Wednesday night. Jack - if he can stay on for 90 minutes - has the ability to break up play and find the right pass. We'll miss him. John - has been doing everything on the left with very little help. When he starts running past opponents with the ball at his feet you get the feeling that something good might happen. Not the greatest as a defender - but hard working and honest.
  13. Winning 23 in a row starts with winning 3 in a row. Maybe, just maybe, this is the start of something we've not seen for a long time - consistency. Last couple of seasons we've lacked the grit to grind out wins from the games where we've played badly.
  14. We should be looking to the future. Miller in the starting 11 is not the future. Late stage sub for rest of the season and no more. I want to see Hererra and Morelos start. IMO we haven't seen enough of the big H to know what he can offer. He might work out with Morelos as a long-term partner.
  15. Yes it woould seem so. Tommy the Bare.
  16. I think given the budget Pedro was working with we've made some very good signings. I voted for Candeias - he offers goals and assists, does his share of defensive dirty work and has helped bring out the best in Tav. Yes, he has been anonymous in some games but like all other 'imports' he's still finding his feet in our league. He has decent all-round skills and I don't think you can fault him for effort.
  17. Expecting a very physical game. Glad we've got the Big Man back looking after the defence, but I wish Candeias had a twin who played on the left. Josh doesn't like to mix it. They'll put in a strong tackle on him first five minutes and you won't see him for the rest of the game...
  18. One of the few bright spots in a shite season This is how I'll always remember Clint Hill.
  19. If we dig hard enough we might be able to prove it was an SFA man on the Grassy Knoll...
  20. I'm not a fan of video refereeing. Maybe too old school, but I think it's important that the game is played and officiated in the same way at all levels. And yes, I'm happy to take the rough and smooth of instant, human-eye refereeing decisions. That said, I heard a radio report the other day about the trials they've been running with video assistant refs in MLS. They limit the video reviews to catch "clear and obvious errors on pivotal sequences like goals, penalty kicks and straight red cards". The reviews were only used in a third of games and, on average, only added about a minute to the games where it was used. If it has to come to video-based decisions (and I don't think old farts like me can hold back the tide) the most important thing is that we don't end up with stop-start games where the man in the middle becomes a video-controlled puppet.
  21. It must be hard as a professional sportsman to accept that your career is over and you are about to join the ranks of the bullshit artist pundits and second rate coaches and managers. I'd hoped Kenny would see out the rest of this season as an impact sub against the wee teams and leave us and his playing career with a bit of dignity. I don't know - and don't really want to know - what happened to get him sent to the kids. But no individual is bigger than the team.
  22. He might have one eye on a potential managerial vacancy at Nottingham Forest....
  23. Leaked or not it's hardly a surprise after the performance at the weekend. The core of the story is Pedro telling his players they have to pull the fucking finger out and play like a team. That's not a meltdown, it's reminding them there are fans who pay good money to see them kick a ball. And that those fans have expectations that Rangers players, wherever they've come from, will fight for every point. It''s just what any supporter would have said to them.
  24. Agreed - with Miller looking less like an automatic pick I want to see if Hererra and Morelos can develop a partnership. Windass is too inconsistent and lightweight to be anything more than a squad player.
