Eric Caldow, captain of Rangers and Scotland and probably the best left back ever to pull on the jersey. Although he lived in Cumnock just a few miles down the road, the rest of his family lived in Muirkirk and Eric played for Muirkirk Juniors before Joining Rangers.
It was certainly a shade lighter in 40's 50's and 60's than what is is today and were known as the "light blues", although the scarves were royal blue.
Very sad news, watched him play many times in the great Rangers teams of the 60's, would have played many times for Scotland if Bill brown hadn't been the man in possession at that time. A real legend rest in peace
Davie Provan was very decent left back. I never saw him play a bad game, but his mobility and positional sense were not quite up to the standard of Eric Caldows but nevertheless a very good player.
I've seen every left-back from Sammy Cox to Lee Wallace and Eric Caldow was by far the greatest left back that ever played for Rangers, a great player and a real gentleman.
First match at Ibrox was versus Hibs in 1956 when I was 16. I was an apprentice at the time and was taken by the guy I worked for. My first match previous to that was versus Kilmarnock at Rugby Park in 1954 when I was 14.
