Ivan Ramis’ move to Celtic from Real Mallorca collapsed over the defender’s wage demands. The 25-year-old centre half was due to fly to Glasgow on Monday ahead of a proposed £3 million move from La Liga’s fourth placed side, but cancelled his flight after talks between the two parties broke down.

Any chances of a late change of heart on either side were then ended when the Parkhead club then turned their attentions to Tottenham Hotspur striker Robbie Keane in a late deal that was concluded close to the midnight deadline.

It was thought that Ramis was unsure about a move to play in the Scottish top flight but came round to the idea with the prospect of a sell-on clause should an English Premier League club come in for him in the future.

The player’s agent, Javier Diaz, had been hopeful of a deal being reached on Monday and insisted that money wouldn’t be a deciding factor, before the player baulked at Celtic’s wage offer.

"The negotiations have accelerated, but we are valuing the sports side. We care about that more than money" Diaz said on Sunday.

"I am hoping an agreement can be reached. Celtic are a massive club and Ivan would be very keen to play there."

The defender has been a key figure for the Barralets this season as they have roared up the La Liga table. Mallorca currently sit in fifth place, courtesy of a 100% home record from nine matches. On the road they haven’t been in such fine form, winning just once from 11 and losing six times.

Ramis missed their 2-1 defeat at bottom club Xerez on Sunday with an arm injury, but is expected to be fit for their home game with Villarreal this weekend.
