IT could be the most expensive Christmas present in history.

Or Rangers could be heading for a new life in the New Year.

Either way Ibrox AND Scottish football is set for another revolution - 22 years after David Murray led the last one.

Professor Chris Brady - head of London's respected BPP Business School - spent yesterday sifting through every detail of the stunning £32million deal to buy Gers.

Tycoon and lifelong fan Craig Whyte has been locked in talks with Murray and an agreement is almost in place. The venture capitalist, whose business interests are worth £1BILLION, could have control of the SPL champs by Christmas.

It would end Murray's four-year search for a buyer and herald the dawn of a new era at Rangers. But what would the future hold?

Brady insists Whyte would not be investing unless he felt Scottish football was poised to change forever.

The business guru told SunSport: "The question I'd ask is a simple one: Why would he want to buy Rangers at this moment in time?

"Does Mr Whyte believe that the market is about to change?

"Would I personally buy Rangers? I might have a go if I thought things were changing.

"I would buy Rangers if I thought that in the next four to five years I would be taking them out of the SPL and into somewhere where the club was going to make money.

"I can't think of any reason why Whyte would want to buy Rangers other than the fact that perhaps they're heading for the Premiership or some new European league.

"Of course, he's a fan so it might just be a toy. But if it was my money I wouldn't buy Rangers unless I thought they were coming out of the SPL.

"Perhaps Whyte knows something we don't.

"There's NO way Rangers can make money in Scotland."

Of course, Whyte, 39, could just be looking for a plaything. Something to throw his money at.

SunSport revealed yesterday that a £20m January war chest has been promised to boss Walter Smith.

And Brady believes that could just be the start. He added: "Mr Whyte might want a toy to play with, that's the only other alternative.

"And that's not necessarily a bad thing. If I was a Rangers fan I wouldn't be bothered by that.

"If he's worth £1bn then he's not going to miss £30m or £40m. If it's a toy it won't matter to him if he's not making money out of it.

"Perhaps, however, he believes it can make money. Perhaps he believes Murray ran the club badly and that he can do a better job."

Whyte was born in Motherwell and went on to amass a fortune through shrewd investments.

At the age of just 15 he played the stock market using cash he saved from his weekend job. By 17 he boasted a bigger bank balance than most of his teachers.

Brady revealed: "Essentially, Mr Whyte is a tipster. He's the Jim Delahunt of corporate finance!

"He'll be looking at Rangers as a worthwhile bet. I wouldn't look too much at hedge funds.

"You need to look at the idea of private equity. Equity means money, so that means private money.

"Mr Whyte owns a private equity company, he is what we term a venture capitalist. He's got cash and he's looking to make more. He's looking for businesses which are under performing."

Since becoming Scotland's youngest ever self-made millionaire Whyte hasn't looked back.

By 26, he was chief executive and owner of Vital Holdings plc - a conglomerate of firms from office cleaning to heavy plant hire.

He now heads London-based venture capital firm Liberty Capital who acquire businesses and specialise in providing finance to help turn-round companies suffering from cashflow problems.

But Brady reckons Whyte won't be buying Rangers on his own.

He said: "It won't be his money. He will be the face of a consortium. There will be a group of people involved in a deal like this.

"He didn't get where he is today - with business interests worth a billion - by spending his own money.

"He'll be looking to spread the bet and that's why I suspect more people are involved behind the scenes

Based on?

I ain't got a source, I'm not going to lie, I have spoken to a few people, text a few on here, they know where I come from... this deal won't go ahead, it's just like the last one.

Muff what would be the motive this time tho mate?

Im just curious we released the story about the club recgognising 1872 a memorial for the disaster etc, so why would they detract from that to throw out a fanciful bid? That would be all that would have been talked about by the fans?

I dont see what we have to gain this time. It took everyone by complete surprise
