RANGERS were last night locked in talks to land Sunderland striker David Healy.

The SPL champs moved for the record-breaking Northern Ireland cap after missing out on Kris Commons.

Boyhood Gers fan Healy has been out of favour at the Stadium of Light under Steve Bruce.

He has spent the last two months on loan at Doncaster Rovers and had hoped to force his way back into the Black Cats first team squad.

But even the £24million exit of Darren Bent and injury to Danny Welbeck haven't led to a recall.

Ibrox boss Walter Smith has targeted him as a low-cost replacement for Kenny Miller.

Healy, 31, is the top scorer in Northern Ireland's international history, but he has dropped out of Nigel Worthington's plans after being starved of regular action at Sunderland.

He's unlikely to face Scotland when the Carling Nations Cup kicks off in Dublin in ten days' time.

But he could join Northern Ireland team-mates Steve Davis and Kyle Lafferty at Ibrox before the transfer window closes on Monday night

Rangers were last night closing in on a loan deal for Northern Ireland striker David Healy.

Ibrox manager Walter Smith has sanctioned a contract until the end of the season for the 31-year-old, back at Sunderland following an emergency loan deal at Doncaster Rovers.

Searching for cover following the departure of top scorer Kenny Miller, Rangers have reached agreement with Sunderland on the bones of a deal. It’s expected that Healy will travel north before tomorrow’s Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-final clash with Motherwell to formally sign.

Healy made six starts for Doncaster, scoring two goals, and his arrival will kill any lingering interest in the former Ibrox duo of Kris Boyd and Nacho Novo.

A former Leeds, Fulham and Manchester United striker, the player has been linked with his boyhood idols on countless occasions, but finally looks set to achieve a long-term ambition by donning a Rangers shirt.

Seen as a useful option to come off the bench, Healy signed for Sunderland two years ago but has had a largely unfulfilled spell in the north east, starting just three competitive matches for the club.

Walter Smith is also keen to secure defensive cover and, despite a search for younger players, may yet turn to Portsmouth’s 35-year-old Icelandic centre half Hermann Hreidarsson.

Meanwhile, fringe youngster Rory Loy left the club yesterday to join League One Carlisle.
