how do you know he needed a "boot up the arse" and even if he did, whats best for a young player needing guidance

1) keeping him at the club where you can keep him close and continually monitor him, guide him and tell him off if needed

2) send him to a two bob tinshed of a club that dont give a flying fuck about his development and where he'll learn heehaw

hmmm i wonder

Having been to a number of U20 games this season and plenty first team ones last season which he played in there were a number of occasions where he simply looked uninterested and others, particularly the U20s where he thought he was the whole show.

You know he will have likely trained at Auchenhowie fairly regularly as is often the case with loanees. He also spent the first half of the season exclusively at Auchenhowie.

When Ferguson was playing under advocaat he was getting the better of world class players not the brickies and posties we hear so much about.

It is rather amusing that TWB and The Dude seem to rub people the wrong way despite being two of the most positive posters on the site.

"Grrr! Go away do-gooders!!! We want to be left alone to wallow in our misery..."

"...And we would have gotten away with it, if it wasn't for you pesky kids... And BP9."

Cheers mate. I like to look at the positives when it comes to Rangers. If inbound as much of a chore as some on here then I'd take a step back and simply watch the games and leave it to others to endlessly debate the same stuff ad nauseam.

He does make a fair point though. I do appreciate that I might wind a few folk up for other reasons too but somewhat unsurprisingly it's the guys who have polar opposite opinions to those I hold who are most vocal. Some on here also seem to look for the negative in every thing the club (or the manager) does. If people dislike what they see as much as they bleat about it on here then maybe they should follow something else.

Some do wallow in misery that's true but just like with every single debate in this forum now you can't express an opinion one way or another without getting dragged into the extreme polarization that happens. Not being happy that a promising youth player has signed for the club who outwith the bheasts have done more to antagonize us the last few years than anybody else doesn't make you a doom and gloom merchant neither does expressing the opinion that Ally McCoist has become a liability and now is doing more harm than good (unintentionally of course)

This is based on much more than a few threads. Theres some posters who I can't recall having had a positive thing to say about the club in a long time. I'm all for debate on stuff like Telfer, McCoist's suitability for the job etc., but some folk need to lighten up a bit.

Shocking. He was here 8/10 years? :(

I am quoting Tom Miller, who seems to be in the know.

Elsewhere, it has been reported that: "if the clubs reach an impasse, then the fee will be decided by tribunal."

I would, however, expect that Mr. Miller knows his onions and it has been already agreed.

And I agree mate, it is a shocking pittance, in footballing terms, these days... But also precious cash for us these days. Sad times.

Ibelieve there is a formula to calculate what a club is owed. Falkirk have been fighting Bradford over it as the FA have their own separate formula which sees them earn much less than the FIFA recommended one.

Good luck to Telfer. He wasn't going to get a game with us so he has probably made the right decision. Lets see if he is good enough. The more of our youngsters who do this the better. No point in sitting at Ibrox and being shown the door when you are 23 without being given the chance and allowing opportunities to pass you by.

He wasn't going to get a chance just like Aird, Macleod andMcKay haven't had one?

I know the above quote was posted a few hours ago, but I've seen similar said so I'm not particularly replying to you Dude (tu) but all who believe Ally has given youth a chance.

Yes, he's played a decent amount of younger players and given them a reasonable start to bench ratio with Mcleod Aird and Crawford, Gallagher I'll accept too, but giving these young guys games does not equate to chances. We should set up in a manner that gives these lads the chance to flourish and develop, punting Crawford out wide, McLeod out wide, Aird on whatever wing Ally is short does not give them the right enviroment to develop, it's not the game time that matters, it's the way we coach and teach these lads that gives them the confidence to improve their own game, a team filled with players all on the same page, all trying to play the same brand of football, right now we have, Wallace, Law, McLeod and temps when fit, looking to play a decent standard of football, while the rest are looking for Daly to lump it.

It all boils down to development, which we don't do, and style, which we don't have

David McCarthy: Charlie Telfer's decision to leave Rangers for United suggests there's something badly wrong with Ibrox youth policy

DAVID reckons questions must be asked of Rangers' youth policy when a young Gers-daft talent decides to walk away from Ibrox to chase first team football at a higher level.

SNS Group JS36521967.jpg Charlie Telfer (left) and Andy Murdoch celebrate with the SFA Youth Cup in May this year

JACKIE McNAMARA knows a young player when he sees one.

John Souttar, Ryan Gauld, Stuart Armstrong, Nadir Cifti, Gary Mackay-Steven and Ryan Dow are pretty conclusive proof of this and the Dundee United boss hasn’t been afraid to play them in the Premiership.

This week he has signed an 18-year-old midfielder from Rangers and given him a three-year contract. You would have to think, then, that McNamara sees a real talent in the kid.

His name is Charlie Telfer. A skilful, mobile midfield player who supports the strikers and has an eye for goal. Have a look on the Rangers website at the 25-yarder he struck past the Dundee United Under 20s earlier in the season and it will tell you what you need to know.

He is a talent all right. He is also Rangers-daft and his story could have been plucked straight from the pages of Roy of the Rovers.

Telfer’s parents enrolled him in one of the Rangers Soccer Schools at the age of seven. The kind of class where kids of all abilities come in and get a bit of training from the club coaches during the summer or Easter holidays. Most of them come in, have a great time, then head home with a ruffle of their hair and a goody bag.

But Telfer was good enough to catch the eye. He was instantly pinpointed as being out of the ordinary. A kid who had walked in off the street was regarded as good enough to be signed by the club’s youth department from the age of nine.

At that age, he and his family were season-ticket holders in the Club Deck above the main stand at Ibrox and young Telfer only had eyes for Barry Ferguson, whom he idolised as a player. He continued to make progress, was part of every Scotland age group as he grew up.

So what happened? More to the point, what is happening in the Rangers youth department?

Last year, Rangers had a talented centre-half called Stuart Urquhart, who was captain of the Scotland Under-17 team. He had the option to sign another one-year deal last summer but chose not to.

He had played for Dumbarton on loan and held his own at a level two divisions above where Rangers were playing at the time. Rangers wanted to keep him but he chose to leave.

He had nowhere to go to at that point but still opted to leave and take his chances on finding another club. Steven Pressley came in and offered him a three-year deal at Coventry City. The 19-year-old has yet to play for the first team but is earmarked as a future star and was in the squad that faced Arsenal in the FA Cup last season.

Urquhart left Rangers and now Telfer has done the same. If Ally McCoist isn’t asking questions of his youth department, perhaps he should be. Is there a problem with the way some boys are being treated in there?

It hasn’t helped that the manager, of course, has chosen to go down the route of experience as he plots Rangers’ course back to the top.

That is his choice but I believe there is disillusionment among young players about the lack of opportunities they have had as the club steamrollered its way to two titles.

League One was tied up early and many of the kids thought they’d be given their chance at the end of last season but only one “new” face was given a run. Calum Gallagher came in and did well.

Which begs the question ... how many others would have done the same if they’d been given the chance? The Rangers journey has unearthed only three kids who can call themselves first-team players now – Lewis MacLeod, Fraser Aird and Gallagher.

Telfer was given one substitute appearance near the end of the season in a 4-0 win at Stenhousemuir.

He has clearly decided he has a better chance of making it by leaving the club and joining Dundee United. That is a reasonable assumption on the evidence of what we’ve seen over the last couple of years.

Next season will likely see even fewer chances for kids to make the breakthrough and this time it will be more understandable.

McCoist will go with players who have been over the course and distance because Rangers simply have to get out of the Championship at the first time of asking and with Hearts and Hibs for company, three into two doesn’t go.

And that’s before you think about Queen of the South and Raith Rovers, who have beaten Rangers in the Ramsdens Cup over the last two seasons.

This is going to be a big challenge for Rangers and although it is hardly building for the long term, I believe McCoist’s decision to bring in Kenny Miller, for instance, makes sense in the circumstances.

But more of an effort should have been made to ensure a kid like Telfer isn’t standing holding the door open for him before jumping in a car to Tannadice.

There is an arguable case for that question to be reversed, perhaps. :pipe:
