To be fair, McCoist would get flack whether he signed him or not. If he signed him there would be chants of "give the youth a chance", no because apparently he's not signing him, he's getting called for all sorts as well.

If Coisty managed to sign Messi he'd still get flack.

Aberdeen wait on answer from Kris Boyd with Rangers and Dundee United still in frame for striker

THE Dons flew out to Ireland yesterday to begin preparations for the new campaign and Derek McInnes admitted he had held talks with Boyd as he looks to add another couple of players to his squad.

DEREK McINNES has confirmed Aberdeen have held signing talks with Kris Boyd - and are waiting on an answer from the out of contract Kilmarnock striker.

The Dons flew to Dublin yesterday to kick off their preparations for the new season, which starts early with a Europa League qualifier on July 3.

And manager McInnes admitted he’d love to have Boyd, who grabbed 22 goals to steer Killie away from relegation trouble last season, on board for the new campaign.

The 30-year-old has no shortage of suitors, with Dundee United also in the frame – and despite reports that Rangers have dropped their interest in bringing Boyd back to Ibrox, Record Sport understands Ibrox boss Ally McCoist is still considering making him an offer.

But McInnes said: “I managed to meet and talk with Kris and his agent. We have made a pitch of what Aberdeen can be as a club for Kris. He has a few other options and wants some time to consider them.”

McInnes is determined to improve upon last season’s third place finish – they were pipped to the runner-up spot by Motherwell in the last minute of the campaign – but added: “I wouldn’t see Celtic as being anything other than overwhelming favourites. They’ve appointed a very good manager with a fantastic reputation and they’ve got a fantastic set of players who have served that club well.

The challenge for everybody in the league is to try to get as close to them as possible. But we just want to concentrate on our own efforts and try to do the best we can, as we did last season. We have to try to get off to a good start, as we did then too.

“The last day of the season was a major disappointment and the outcome of that is that we have had to come back a bit earlier. But now we’re back, we’re bursting to get going again.

There is plenty to look forward to. We have made some good signings and have already got a lot of good players in the building. I’d still like to bring in one or two ahead of the season starting but I think we’re in a good place as we stand.

“The club has been busy throughout the close season to make sure we’re ready for the start. Shay Logan re-signing was great and we brought in Ashley Taylor and Scott Brown.

It was important we got that work done early on, and even more so with the early kick off in the European game.

“We said at the start of last season we’d love to bring European football back to the club and we’ve done that now, so we will savour that when it comes round and we have to make sure we’re ready for it.”

McInnes believes the fact that season ticket sales are going well at Pittodrie points to the Dons fans buying into what he is trying to achieve at Aberdeen.

He said: “We are just shy of 8500 season tickets, which is a fantastic effort from the support. It shows their commitment and belief in the team, which is really satisfying.”

I know that Walter Smith was livid at Boyd for not signing for Birmingham for reported 3 million. He said he respected his decision, but he didn't like it. McCoist was at the club at the time, I wonder if that has something to do with it,,,,,

We tried to shaft him and he deserved to be treated with a bit more respect at the time.

If that's got a part to do with ally not wanting to sign him then maybe he should look at his own actions when he rejected job opportunities with us.

It's from the DR I'll take it with a pinch of salt.

Next headline from them if Boyd does sign for someone else will be along the lines Rangers fail to land their No1 target or some shite like that.

The DR was right about Miller coming to Ibrox a month before he signed. It's not all nonsense. But yes, they tell people what they want to hear; it's all about making money.

We really need to look at the bigger picture here.

Boyd could fire in the goals which could win us the SC and a place in Europe the following season.

It's a no brainer for me.

We have Miller, Clark, Daly, Shiels, and Gallagher. The whole team will shift up a gear in the Championship. The last 2 years they've basically had to play against 11 defenders which wasn't a lot of fun for the players, or fans. Championship teams will come at us allowing the players more room to maneuver. We'll see a whole different Rangers this year.
