Diego Poyet

RANGERS could move for Diego Poyet to replace Joey Barton.

Ibrox manager Mark Warburton is weighing up offering the Uruguayan Under-20 cap a short-term deal after Gers agreed an exit package with Barton.

Midfielder Poyet — son of ex-Chelsea star Gus — is a free agent after he left West Ham by mutual consent in August.

He looked to be on the brink of a move to Derby this week until learning that Gers could be interested.

Poyet, 21, was highly-rated as a kid coming through the ranks at Charlton.

Born in Spain, he played for England’s youth teams before switching his allegiance to his parents’ country.

But his progress stalled after joining the Hammers in 2014.

He had spells on loan at Huddersfield, MK Dons and back at Charlton before having his contract cancelled on deadline day.

After three months as a free agent, Poyet wants a move which he hopes will get his career back on track.

Barton’s exit — after he was suspended for a bust-up with Andy Halliday and Warburton – has now opened the door for Poyet to move to Glasgow.

Those type of buys are seldom seen in January, at least not at an overinflated price.

Wasn't this boy pretty highly rated? pretty sure that he was on loan at Brighton and was outstanding.

Just read the article think it was Charlton his rave reviews came at

Assuming he doesn't have an attitude problem he's a good player and would be a good signing. Wonder why he went three months unattached though, was he injured?

I wonder how good a player he is if he has been unattached for so long . Also how fit he would be given the problems we have with injuries and fitness this season it's the last thing we need is a player who will have to be brought up to the correct fitness levels

I mind seeing him at MK Dons and thinking he was a player. Can't believe he is on a free tbh.

Aren't many players of guaranteed quality available as a free agent in November...

If true Matt Crooks even further down the pecking order then.

From what I've seen he would sit infront of the defensive mid he's attacking.

Players have been available over three transfer windows but still we are struggling under Warburton to get anyone decent in.

Well in terms of midfielders this summer we signed a well known trouble maker and disruptive influence who has proved to be just that. An injury prone guy from semi retirement in the USA who's injured. An injury prone youngster from Accrington whos also been injured his whole time here and another youngster from Liverpool, who surprise surprise we've yet to really see due to injury.

So using the law of averages, eventually if we keep signing them we'll stumble upon a decent midfielder at some point. Either that or he'll be out injured as soon as he joins.

By that you mean you've never heard of him or seen him play so he couldn't possibly be good.

Don't need to or want to see him play , he's been tried out at 5 clubs and he's only 21 , he's obviously shite thats why none of the other clubs want him. Do we really want to sign another Warburton classic ?

I adore a Manager that can spot a player three transfer windows in and we are as poor as ever with older less mobile and permanetly injured players.
