Marco van Basten's proposed changes to football

More subs but without the game stopping would work.

Agree with Slimjim no subs allowed in injury time.

I think orange cards for the cunts who drag each other about during set plays would work. If two are clearly tugging shirts prior to the kick then both off to the sin bin. If another 2 do it, then the same applies. They also get fines and the cards add up

He wants to:

  • Scrap the offside rule
  • Replace the penalty shootout with a "take-on challenge" (see link for more info)
  • Scrap the rule of giving a red card to a player who deliberately prevents a goal using his hand
  • Bring in a rule that states only the captain of each side can speak to the referee
  • Introduce a "basketball-style" fouling system where a player who commits 5 fouls has to leave the field
  • Reduce the number of games each team has to play domestically each season
  • Increase the number of substitutions
  • Stamp out time wasting to make the last 10 minutes of games flow better.

Some horrendous suggestions there IMO.  Admittedly there are some rules and regulations that need tweaking to improve things, but suggesting a change to the whole structure of the game is ridiculous from MVB.

I'm glad there is a nutcase high up in FIFA trying to make changes just for debating purposes and help improve the game, but scrap the offside rule, no extra time, basketball style fouling system... ?.

how about video technology - take a little power away from useless officials. The game is hardly impervious to corruption now is it?

Video ref for inconclusive goal and penalty decisions, and only if the onfield ref refers the decision to video ref. i.e. check for off-side/ball crossed line/fouls/dives etc

I'd also like to see the officials microphones being audible during live games on t.v. like they have here in Australia with the rugby.  It's great being able to hear them discuss their decisions with linesman and players and clears up any confusion as to why fouls etc have been given.

The last 10 minutes one might work.. Was so frustrating, particulary when playing in europe, when we needed a goal and the opposition rolled about the floor, took a minute to take a throw in or crawled off the park when replaced.
