Barton is without doubt a tit of the highest order and rules are rules and he broke them , but the rules regarding betting in football are fuckin ridiculous. To hammer players for betting on games where they can have no direct influence just seems absurd.

Have a look at the pictures above ^^ lol

Football authorities - and clubs - place bets that in partnering with companies whose sole economic and commercial purpose in life is to make money by persuading people to place bets, they too can share in that wealth.    The association that football authorities and clubs now have with companies whose only purpose is to make money out of gambling, and betting has become embedded.   The game becomes intrinsically linked to the lifestyle of betting and gambling.    Goes right the way down to influencing (directly or indirectly) children through the names of betting companies appearing on replica shirts and to the naming of cup competitions.

Money talks as the saying goes.  And football authorities - and clubs - are right at the head of the crowd when it comes to wanting to hear about the money that betting firms can bring.........all in the name of promoting the game, of adding wealth to clubs, of bringing (supposed) prestige to cup competitions.

So encouraging gambling is what football authorities - and clubs - are really all about at the heart of it.   Income generation by the betting companies from supporters (and players) gambling and wealth distribution to the football authorities - and clubs - as a result.   It's ok to promote gambling.  It's ok to take sponsorship money from betting companies..........but players must not bet.    Perhaps the more accurate thing is players are daft to get caught betting.

Barton knew the rules and decided to flout them anyway.   He pays a hefty penalty.   Possibly a career-threatening penalty.

Thing is though, I wonder how many young supporters today (or maybe even supporters not so young) might get caught in a gambling addiction caused in part by the blatant eagerness of the commercial decision takers in football authorities - and in clubs - to chase the very top dollar of sponsorship by lapping up all the sponsorship they can get from betting companies.   Money talks right enough.   It's a pity that gambling money seems to be talking to football by way of loud 'come and bet on me' megaphone.

As for Barton, the story will doubtless sell him some more books as he turns his attention to what is bound to be an ever more serious and visible theme - that of the risk of gambling addiction being made worse by the influence of betting companies on sport

Only for his team to win which is what he should be trying to do anyway

He also bet against his club to lose, albeit claims not to have been in any match day squads.

18 months is very harsh, but he's an absolute fanny for doing it.

I can see the headlines in Scotland.. "Former Rangers player in betting scandal".

You beat me to it... although realistically the Headlines up here will say...

He bet on himself at first goalscorer in one of those bets.  Betting on yourself to be the first goal scorer might appear to be trivial but it could result in a player taking ridiculous shots at goal instead of passing to a team-mate who is in a better position or even 'accidently' getting his body in the way of a teammates goal bound shot.
