Various reasons... 1) Some of the biggest clubs around the world do it, give their ST holders 1 free game on the season ticket, whether thats a friendly or an early match in Europe....are we that desperate for money we cant give something back to the fans? 2) These friendly matches hardly ever sell out, even against the bigger names. Giving them away gets more people through the door, spending money in the superstore and on food etc 3) In this particular occasion, the match has only been made because we got humiliated and dumped out of Europe in the first round & now we're scrambling together to get friendlies sorted, this one was only finalised at the weekend and you're expected to pay for the tickets a few days later (also a week before payday for most) It could easily have been a good will gesture from the club, these fans have given them the transfer budget this season, have went to Luxemborg to support them and will go to Sheffield in a few weeks. My husband is working but I'm scared not to go incase it goes against me in the ballot for semi finals and finals should we get there!
