Serge Atakayi

We are banging on about the left side/wing, from what I've seen of this kid not as much as a few others on here get to see the 20s but he's the standout, with him being involved with the first team with barjonas and few others towards the end of last season, I was hoping he'd be getting bench time at least.

Watching the highlights from 20s game v Southampton on Monday and he;s head and shoulders above the rest of the lads. Well taken goals with composure, direct, great control and pacey, what more for a sniff at the first team?

Thoughts?

We should be giving these youngsters some proper game time, to see if they can handle it.

If we were putting games to bed, earlier in the game, we could afford to bring these young guys on.

Knowing our luck we'll have to blood them early, due to injuries to 1st team squad members, although that might no be a bad thing...?

Need to be killing teams off early if we want to bleed in these lads. Can't bring in youth players if you insist on winning games the hard way.

I'm all for bringing through youngsters when they are ready to bring something to our team that improves what we already have; but at this point in time young Serge Atakayi doesn't have it. If you listen to what Graham Murty says and what Elfideldo writes on here you will realise that Atakayi is a good prospect but he is the type of player that will be a world beater for a short spell and then disappear for half a game (very much like Josh Windass against Motherwell) and that he needs to knuckle down a great deal before he can even think of getting into our 1st team squad.

He certainly sounds a good prospect, but that's all he is at the moment.

The issue for the youth players at the moment is we are still trying to knit a team together after a load of changes. Until we are settled I can't see Pedro experimenting too much. He wants momentum and cohesion

This, would love to give the likes of Serge & Barjonas game time tonight but Pedro can't afford another slip up so early after Europe.

It's far more important for our 1st team to gel and get players match fit (i.e Dorrans) gain a bit more momentum for the Hibs & Hearts games coming up.

Tav for Hodson, Morelos for Miller and possibly rest Bruno.

And rightly so :tu:

Best thing to do would be to loan him out for 6 months or so if he plays him in the league or the cups and the team have a shocker then people will be quick to point the finger at pedro and start the pedro out campaign again! Very slight player no doubting the talent though

Hopefully his progress will serge ahead and can improve his atakying play :pipe:

This! We need to find some form and settle down after so many changes ( again) before we think about 'trying' youth out. It's one thing bringing them into a settled winning team but another to see what they have at this moment in time.

Sometimes you have to take a gamble on a youngster, we can't keep them all wrapped in cotton wool until they're in their 20s.

Look at some of the great names of the past who broke through at 16, 17 and 18 - Henderson, Bud, DJ, Durrant, the two Fergusons to name a few.

They all 'broke' through into fairly settled and winning teams - we need a wee period of consolidation before any more experimentation

Some people might find this suprising.

There is a massive difference between Motherwell or Dunfermline  and Southampton Under 18's.

So true! People don't appreciate how much of a step up it is from youth football to any level of the professional game.

They will also have the Challenge Cup games to get some extra experience. It was interesting that Graeme Murty has put the programme of games together to give them some different experiences from what they've had from playing in Scotland. He said as much after the Southampton game.

I'd rather we use the players in the first team squad that are on the fringes for now, the youth players seem to have a decent set of fixtures to challenge and develop them for the future. They have time and some interesting experience to gain this season. Lets hope they can learn and improve from them.

DJ came into a team in 1970 a distant third behind the tarriers and Aberdeen.

Durrant and Derek Ferguson broke through in the early to mid 80s, when we had one of the worst Rangers teams in living memory. And they improved hat team.

Neither of those teams ( while poor by our standards) were 'unstable' - we have just signed 9 new players forming the basis of our current team - when the players you named came in their impact could be judged - in the current set up it would be difficult to either judge their impact and also difficult to allow them the time required to help young players along.
