Rangers Picture Thread

Another cup final victory for the Rangers. Another defeat for the team who have lost more cup finals than any other club on the planet.

Baxter takes the ball home. Well he might as well, he had it for most of the game.

In the background?? The invincibles? More like the invisibles!

Whatever happened to all the Del boy wee blue cars?

There used to be loads around the park.

Good question

No idea

On 31 March 2003, they were banned from use on roads in the United Kingdom because of safety concerns.

For a number of years, governments had been put under pressure from disability campaigners who felt the one-person cars were unhelpfully antisocial. If you were a mum or dad, for instance, you were not able to drive your children to school.

The scheme was meant to close totally in 1981 but some people really liked their invalid carriages and kept on using them until the outright ban in 2003.

Rather than providing free vehicles, cash schemes like the mobility allowance and Motability gradually took over in the 1970s, allowing you to buy and adapt a mainstream car. More than 600,000 people presently take advantage of the Motability scheme and gain independence as a result.

Maintenance of the cars had become difficult and the ministry declared them unsafe.

They were all called in and crushed, though a few survive in museums and private ownership.

The Invacar Ltd (UK) was established in 1948 by Oscar Greeves after having built a 3-wheeler for his paralysed cousin, Derry Preston-Cobb. As a result of the many casualties from the second World War Greeves realised the need for such transport to be widely available. After contacting the government they agreed to pay for the vehicles to be made of which sold in great numbers. These first vehicles were powered by an air cooled Villiers 147cc engine and as well as Invacar other manufacturers also received a contract from the Ministry of Health to produce 3-wheelers. These included Harding Ltd, Dingwall & Son, AC Cars Ltd, Barrett, Tippen & Son, Thundersley and Coventry Climax.

The only non-blue 70's Invacar ever known was a British Racing Green one with its roof chopped off and was briefly known as the 'INVACAB'.

Quality side note.

In 1978 an AA (UK roadside assitance) man was called out by the police to recover two Invacars whose drivers had been pulled over on the M5 motorway. Both Invacars overtook the police car earlier at a speed of 70mph or more.

These days it would be all Range Rovers, Audi’s and BMWs round the trackside. And people with “disabled” grannies sitting in them.
