Quoiting was a game for men used to hard physical labour. Quoits were made of cast iron or steel and weighed 10lbs or more, and were thrown at a metal pin 21 yards distant in an attempt to encircle it.

I thought it was a spelling mistake and that he indulged in quoting people, ha
