Archie was the first sub in first class football in Scotland.Substitutes had been in football from the 1860's some where as we know now others where more like replacements for players who didn't turn up.

I'm not disputing  Archie Gemmill   was the first sub in first class football in Scotland

As for   substitutes in football from the 1860's all were as replacements for players who didn't turn up   in   English public school games.

None of which is relevant to what I said
