The city football club have submitted plans to Glasgow City Council to build a memorial wall which would contain a section for the interment of the mortal ashes of Rangers FC supporters. The club say that they want to turn an unused car park at Copland Road into a memorial garden which would have a wall, gates, fencing, public realm improvements and associated works. The memorial garden would operate 8am to 8pm daily if the plans are given the go-ahead. Drawings for the ambitious plans reveal that the club also want to have an Ibrox Disaster memorial within the garden. A total of 66 lives were lost and more than 200 people were injured during the 1971 Ibrox disaster which was a crush among the crowd at an Old Firm game. The plans also show there will be an interactive pod with an Android tablet and charging points for smartphone devices. IMO I think we would be better using money to spruce up unused building beside it with museum/cafe/shop. I like the idea of some sort of a memorial plaque/wall for the names of the victims of the Ibrox Disaster in that location though. A memorial garden should not look like some 1960s brutalist concrete building foundation. It is a lovely idea and sentiment but not that. That is awful. We Will Follow Rangers 12,921 Posted January 12, 2018 Share Posted January 12, 2018 Think it looks perfectly suitable for purpose, low maintenance which would be a factor and consistent seasonal appearance, As a memorial in no way can it be knocked back and can be the catalyst for further improvements linked to it and therefore lesson the likelihood of being refused further planning permission as we know the council aint gonna want to do fuck all for us. Dunno if I wouldn't like to see some greenery around it to isolate it a bit from the rest of the urban wasteland feel of the car park. Make it feel more like an isolated wee grove. Looks a bit marooned in the car park as it is. Otherwise I think it has quite a simple and subdued look, which is the way it should be. Good idea.
