A competition for the best 32 teams in the world.....crazy that it includes Saudi Arabia (ranked 67), Morocco (41), Egypt (45)

and bloody Russia at 70 would never qualify....   whilst Italy (19) aren't there.

Whole qualifying process is garbage

At least France are playing football. Australia are like Motherwell.

Different kind of resources but it's good to see some varying types of footballers on this stage

Expanding the number of teams further is too much though

Think this is going to be a tournament where all the big players turn it on, Ronaldo, Costa, Griezman, Pogba, and none of the lesser teams come close to qualifying.

They all play together at such a high level it's like the Bjorg/Connors/McEnroe days in tennis years ago where the top players were consistently raising the standard against each other in major finals, whilst lesser players never got near a final.

No shocks at all then, with all the big guns coasting through............

I lost respect for Australia after they switched confederations, to avoid playing off against a South American team.

They qualified for this World Cup by beating Honduras in a playoff.

They played Uruguay in 2005 in a playoff?

The rankings are alot of pish and mean next to nothing. Switzerland are currently ahead of France and Spain.

The likes of Italy and Holland weren't good enough to qualify and I don't personally miss them at all. I'd rather watch a spirited Australia than an Italy underachieving.  Those moaning about teams missing from these tournaments are probably the same ones who moan about the same teams being in the Champions League every season.

That's the thing bud it ain't for the best teams no more....it's just about globalisation and supposedly promoting the game around the world.

No matter how many African teams they allow into the competition they will still never yield a winner.

Was that not really more about the lack of competition in the Oceania confederation?   They even beat a team 30-0 or something in the qualifying games for that

From Wikipedia

Quote

On 11 April 2001, the Australian and American Samoa national association football teams played each other in a qualifying match for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The match was played at the International Sports Stadium in Coffs Harbour, Australia. Australia set a world record for the largest victory in an international football match, winning the game 31–0. Australia's Archie Thompson also broke the record for most goals scored by a player in an international match by scoring 13 goals.[1] David Zdrilic, the scorer of eight goals in the match, achieved the second highest number of goals in an international match since World War I.

The outcome of the match led to debates about the format of qualification tournaments, with the Australian manager Frank Farina and Thompson feeling that preliminary rounds should be introduced to avoid such unbalanced matches, views shared by the international footballing body FIFA. It eventually led to the introduction of a preliminary round in the Oceanian zone qualification for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The unbalanced level of opponents also partly contributed to Australia's move to the Asian Football Confederation in 2006.
