Maybe something to do with a lot of people not traditionally from the city moving there for work, as well as Uniteds successes.

They had remarkably Mancunian accents rather than an influx. Its definitely more even but my experience is red outnumbered blue. 

The one season (74/75) that Man United were out of the top league (most recently) they still had the top attendances despite City being the more succesful club.
