Tav to get offered new contract

He’s on 3 year deal why the need???

Possibly to protect our investment in the player this time?

Add in a buy out clause at a sensible number, say £6/7m which if he continues to play the way he has been would be completely justified.

Why do people always say stuff like this.

Buy out clauses benefit the player and only the player. Why would we want to have a buy out clause in a contract? Especially as low as £6m. A buy out clause doesn't mean a club is going to give us a guaranteed bid of £6m the only thing it does is put a ceiling on what we can make from him and take any decisions completely out of our hands.

What if we go on to win the league, get a good Euro run with Tav being the star man and club captain and could be worth double that but you've put in a £6m release clause? Release clauses are not good things. If £6m is his value then clubs will bid that whether he has a clause or not, if they weren't going to bid £6m in the first place they aren't going to bid it with a release clause in it either.

However, on the contract. He's now club captain, a star player and attracting interest, and as someone said he was probably given promises after we turned down bids to keep him here so I don't have a problem with it. If I found out Tavernier was going on to earn £16-£18k I'd be fine with it.

Why would you not then offer him a new contract reflective of performances, up his pay as he's a league winning captain and now CL player, and up the buy out to 15m?

Of course it protects us if it's high enough.

How does a buy out clause protect us ? Do you not understand what a buy out clause is

WBA would probably have doubled his wages and bottom line is he'd not be a happy player if we didn't pay him the going rate.

That's not true.

Are we just forgetting his shitebag performances last season?  He has three years left that’s plenty, if he has a brilliant season by all means offer him something at the end of it but not now.

If it's set for higher than we value a player then the club, player and agent all know what's needed for another club to buy him. It can remove a player being deliberately unsettled and can give a buying club a simple decision to make without need for a bidding war.

I understand it's not all positives, but neither is it all negative.

Setting a £6m release clause on Tavernier would be a ridiculous decision. The only way it's okay if it's set ridiculously high otherwise you're just limiting yourself to no benefit. Anything less than £12m release clause would be a stupid decision and there's just no point putting one in if Tavernier and his agent don't demand one.

So why a 12m pound one?

How can anyone forget any of these apparent shitebag performances, when you keep posting about them every 5 minutes.

What time we meeting today mate?

Because realistically his value is not going to go above that no matter if he has a good season or not but I'm not saying that either. I'm saying there's no point voluntarily putting one in at all, but if there is one then anything below 12m is stupid.

Who do you know what WBA would pay him.

So if any player gets an offer put in and the wages are better, then he says no to the move we should just match that wage.

Are you Martin Bain??

He’s protected for the length of his contract.

Buy out clause just means we have to let him talk to a club if he wants

it doesn’t protect him from leaving

Yup.

A higher one than we expect his value to reach can be a good thing for us.

But unnecessary. Only suitable value is one beyond his potential value in which case no club will pay it anyway so it's irrelevant. If you want to stick a £20m release clause on Tav go ahead because it's irrelevant but anyone who thinks putting a £6m one on him voluntarily is good business is off their head.
