pcbear 10,913
Gerrard has surrounded himself with quality staff, Beale being one. With Craig Mullholand heading up the youngsters we look atm to be in pretty safe hands. Long term the problem may come when a big EPL club with money to burn are in a bad place and they want to revamp. Malvern
Popular Post Creampuff 22,628
The brains behind Rangers' revival: Michael Beale has found bliss as right-hand man to Steven Gerrard It is Steven Gerrard's job to relay the Rangers message to the world but, behind the scenes at Ibrox, the arch-communicator is Michael Beale. On the training pitch and in staff meetings, Beale emits a constant tide of information, opinion and ideas. When Gerrard needs to tweak something mid-match, it's to Beale that he often turns, sure that he can count on an immediate response from his first-team coach. Speak to those close to the dressing room and they describe Beale as not only an impressive orator but the brains of the operation. It is easy to assume that he and Gerrard go back a long way but despite their shared Liverpool connection, their career paths have crossed only intermittently. 'I was surprised Steven asked me to come to Rangers,' says Beale. 'Not for any reason other than that we hadn't worked closely together before.' Beale is just a few months younger than Gerrard and while his back-story lacks the same grandstand moments, it is no less fascinating. While Gerrard was picking up trophies as Liverpool captain and collecting a century and more caps for England, Beale quit playing at 21, began coaching futsal with kids then took a job within Chelsea's extensive academy set-up. He joined Liverpool in 2012 and took over an Under-15s team containing Trent Alexander-Arnold, a player he took great pride in seeing subdue Neymar in a Champions League match at Anfield last Tuesday night. So far, so Brendan Rodgers - but it is the nine-month sojourn as assistant manager of Brazil's Sao Paulo a couple of years ago that leaps out from his CV. The adventure was brief but widened his perspective. To illustrate the point, he contends that his time in South America equipped him to empathise with Rangers' sometimes errant star striker Alfredo Morelos. Gerrard's extensive backroom staff draws heavily on the Liverpool link. Assistant manager Gary McAllister played alongside Gerrard during his formative years as an Anfield player, Tom Culshaw was a respected coach within the academy set-up and Jordan Milsom was head of fitness with Gerrard's Under-18 team last season. During his first spell on Merseyside, Beale had progressed to the role of Under-23s coach but had been overseeing the club's youngest intake after returning from Brazil. 'People assume we must have this long history together but we don't,' he confirms. 'When he spoke to me about his ambitions and vision, it was clear we have a lot of common beliefs. 'I said I was going to go away for the weekend and speak to the family but I never actually got as far as speaking to my wife. 'We share the workload. Tom is a fantastic coach, Gary and Steven played for 18, 19 years but of the four I have probably spent most time as a field coach. I started with Chelsea at 21 and turned 38 this week, so that gives you an idea how long I have spent working through the different age groups. 'For a young coach, I have had some big experience. I think I'm able to communicate that very simply to our players. 'My job is to implement the style Steven wants in training. We have an idea of where we want to take the team in terms of a playing style. It's not a formation, it's a set of principles on how we see the game and how we want to be perceived. 'Having the neatest handwriting of the staff, it's my job to put that down on paper and then make sure it's set out on the pitch.' Befittingly for a man who admits he could 'talk for England', language is a Beale obsession. Each night the coach goes home to his flat in Glasgow's west end and dutifully translates his coaching sessions into Portuguese. Lured to Sao Paulo by manager Rogerio Ceni, Beale immersed himself in Brazilian culture and resolved to learn the language. Ceni's sacking after just six months foretold the end of the adventure but he won't let go of the lingo. 'I'm a bit of a mad scientist,' he laughs. 'Every day I write the training session, photocopy it for everybody and then, when I get home, I will write it again in Portuguese. 'It's my way of ensuring I don't lose it. I still call my friends in Brazil but here at Rangers I can only practise on Daniel Candeias.' He continues: 'My parents have lived in Spain for 12 or 13 years. They speak Spanish and I don't. I wanted to learn but it was a hobby and I would dip into it. 'When I moved to Brazil, I needed to learn Portuguese. In the supermarket, it was difficult but on the football pitch, it was great. 'I would advise all young coaches to do that. How do you upskill yourself? 'At Chelsea, I worked under a lot of foreign managers - Claudio Ranieri, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Avram Grant, Andre Villas-Boas, Guus Hiddink, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto di Matteo and Rafa Benitez. 'I went to Liverpool under Brendan Rodgers and then Jurgen Klopp. Each spoke more than one language. 'What makes a top coach nowadays? You can work on the sessions at different clubs but to communicate with players, to understand cultures? That's the next level. 'Trying to understand why Fredo (Morelos) might behave slightly differently and become more emotional in certain situations than, say, Connor Goldson.' Sportsmail meets with Beale in the kitroom of Villarreal's Estadio de la Ceramico the night before Rangers' impressive 2-2 draw against the La Liga side. As is often the case, Beale had been the dominant figure at the pre-match training session. While Gerrard joined the players to take part in a passing drill at the beginning, Beale set the tempo and laid out the structure of the work. Yet he remains clear on the hierarchy and expresses admiration for the way the Rangers manager has tackled his first frontline job. 'I've been hugely impressed with Steven, the way he has built his management team and how open-minded he has been,' he explains. 'I was even more impressed that he went to Liverpool's Under-18 team to start. He always set a standard as a player. And watching men like him and Philippe Coutinho up close made me want to be a better coach. 'The way Steven talks to the players is fantastic. He is really honest and direct, so there is real clarity in his communication. 'People say he is inexperienced but he is not inexperienced when it comes to big games. 'The single most important thing is management of people and I think the most impressive managers pick their staff well. 'If you go as manager and want to be the coach too, you might have a problem.' By merely accepting the job, Gerrard had the Rangers fans onside from the start, his stardust an antidote for years of suffering. Impressively, his team's early form has provided substance to back up the big reputation. If domestic results have been mixed, the team's European form has been a revelation. Qualification for the Europa League was always the target but the resilience displayed in overcoming Ufa with nine men in Russia was again on display in Spain on Thursday night. Carlos Bacca's first-minute goal for the hosts could have precipitated a collapse but, despite riding their luck for spells, Rangers found a response to snare a point on match night one of the group phase. 'We have had some big moments that have helped us come together,' says Beale. 'Believe it or not, going down to 10 men at Aberdeen was a team-building thing. What happened in Ufa wasn't ideal but there was a feeling in the dressing room that it had brought us together. 'If you are a Rangers fan you couldn't say it's not been exciting. It's been a roller-coaster ride. We would just like to keep 11 on the pitch more often. 'We are still evolving our style but the club has supported us and the fans have bought into it. 'After three months, it's all in our favour. What will happen after nine, 12 months, I don't know. 'We are nowhere near where we want to take it.' Throughout all this there's one obvious question. If Beale is so clear-headed about his philosophy and positively enjoys delivering his message, should he not be looking to branch out into management on his own? 'I was probably heading that way when I went to Brazil and I had a couple of offers when I came back,' he says. 'But at this moment in time, I am extremely happy. 'I'm very lucky to have a manager who allows me to be creative and my family will be moving up soon. 'I'm enjoying Glasgow - it's not Sao Paulo, which had 25 million people and the third-worst crime rate in the world. 'My two boys are six and four and they'll come up with my wife and our dog. They'll be happy here.' Beale trots off along the tiled corridor of the Ceramico, bound for the team hotel and his nightly homework. Those notes won't translate themselves. Bobby Hume 12,990
Cheers OP .... that was was a good read ..... nice to know we have such a widely experienced backroom staff with a concrete plan to take us to the top .... this lad Beale has quite a CV for his age and it can only be to our benefit .... as young and as relatively inexperienced as SG is he has certainly brought together a crew who are ..... this speaks well of his judgement along with his man management skills. Glad to see MB moving his family up here also ..... this act alone is very positive and is to be welcomed.
