Ibrox upgrades

MARK ALLEN has lifted the lid on plans to redevelop Ibrox and create an elite environment at Rangers.

Gers have forked out significant funds on stadium improvements and repairs since Dave King replaced the old regime three years ago.

Work is also expected to begin on a new youth complex at the club’s Auchenhowie training ground later this month.

And now director of football Allen has spilled the beans on Ibrox refurb proposals which will help Steven Gerrard’s side gear up for future home games.

He told Rangers TV: “I am a great believer in your environment is a vital part of what you stand for and who you are.

“It says a lot about your standards and values and the look and feel of your environment is as equally important as signing the right players.

We started here (Hummel Training Centre) with some of the pitches and team facilities and the next phase is to fine tune some of the stuff at Ibrox.

“That will mean the match day experience for the players is right and proper for what you would expect in an elite environment.

There will be a dining area for the players to have a pre-match meal, there will be a players’ lounge, a gym area to get ready for games.

The manager will become closer to the changing room. It is all part and parcel of the bigger picture.

“It is about the players and management, but it is also about the environment.”

Speaking at the club’s AGM in December, chairman King confirmed Rangers would continue developing the stadium over the coming seasons.

He said: “As far as improvements are concerned, we’ve got some very ambitious plans, both on our own and working with the council for project 2022.

“We’re looking at complete improvement and refurb of the surrounds of the ground and really redeveloping the stadium completely.

“And that would be a very, very significant improvement in terms of the match day experience for fans.”

Good stuff , the players area does need gutted , time the wood on the dressing room corridors went , plenty of nice wood throughout the stand from the ship especially the entrance and marble staircase to keep the tradition of the stadium , down stairs needs totally modernised

When we were on the tour, the guide said that the old boot room was going to be Gerrards office.

Youth team travelling to Moscow as part of their development as well.

This low priority nice to have is not the action of a club who are struggling financially.

I went on a stadium tour at ManUtd years ago and though it was a fine stadium it missed the heritage and history we have it was that modern . The wooden panelling that came from building the Queen Mary , the big hooks that were made for Bowler Hats of the time , the manager's office where so many famous players have signed on the dotted line . . . . . . .you couldn't buy any of that .

I wouldn’t touch the dressing rooms I just don’t like the wood on the downstairs corridors, I think it’s coz the walls above are painted white now , it used to be sky blue wallpaper with the RFC badges going through it , it looked better then

Done the Old Trafford tour with my boy and his youth team, it does lack a bit of character. The Munich tunnel is good but it's all very modern and lacks that bit of history and heritage. The tour guide had to be corrected by myself when he claimed old Trafford was the only one or two club stadiums in the UK with the UEFA 5 star rating, i had to butt in and tell him Ibrox had it as well.

That's the reason I was there too  , he was with Harmony Row at the time . 

Yeah certainly lacked the character and aura we have . I'd have gone straight to SAF about the tour guide - he'd soon have sorted him out

Exactly. Like you I’ve done the tours of big stadiums, the Bernabeu and the Nou Camp, impressive certainly but they’re a bit showbiz and commercialised. 

They don’t have the feel of Ibrox, that essence of a history and tradition that are completely genuine. I’ve been lucky enough to have been in hospitality and wandered along the corridor to the Trophy Room, seeing all the mementos and reminders from the days when my granda watched Alan Morton and my dad watched Willie Waddell, it got me quite emotional and it wasn’t just the drink. There’s just something about our home that’s unique.

Very well put HP , there is a continuity there that transcends generations . I did the tour with my kids initially  and just had to take my dad and uncle once seeing it that first time , as I knew they'd appreciate genuine history . And they did .

On the way home from the Blackpool tournament? That's when we did it, I enjoyed it despite liking Man City they must make great money the way they run it, just constant tourists and at the end you arrive in the club merchandise shop, we bought fuck all

That’s not been a thing for about 10 years. UEFA stadium category has completely changed and sadly we’ve been left behind.

Our stadium was one of the best in Europe in the mid 90s sadly it’s still stuck there.
